{"id":1608,"date":"2007-04-19T09:03:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-19T15:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/gonzales-talked-with-rove-bush-about-iglesias\/"},"modified":"2007-04-19T09:03:00","modified_gmt":"2007-04-19T15:03:00","slug":"gonzales-talked-with-rove-bush-about-iglesias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/gonzales-talked-with-rove-bush-about-iglesias\/","title":{"rendered":"Gonzales talked with Rove, Bush about Iglesias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFQz3FSgI\/AAAAAAAACC4\/z7b01t0o06Q\/s1600-h\/Gonzales,+Alberto.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFQz3FSgI\/AAAAAAAACC4\/z7b01t0o06Q\/s200\/Gonzales,+Alberto.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055155630592313858\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>During today\u2019s hearing, U.S. Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/ag\/aggonzalesbio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Alberto Gonzales<\/a> continued his assertion that he wasn\u2019t intimately involved in the decision to fire former U.S. Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and approved Iglesias\u2019 firing based on the recommendation of subordinates in the department.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before speaking specifically about Iglesias, Gonzales said he takes responsibility for the mishandling of the firings. There have been repeated contradictions in the explanations by the Justice Department and White House that have caused the situation to explode into a full-blown scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThose eight attorneys deserved better. They deserved better from me and from the Department of Justice,\u201d Gonzales said. \u201cI accept full responsibility for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales also admitted to making statements that directly contradict those of the staffers he said made the recommendations on who would be fired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy misstatements were my mistakes, no one else\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cI never sought to mislead or deceive the Congress or the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Under questioning from U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/leahy.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Leahy<\/a>, D-Vermont, and during a testy exchange with Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/specter.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arlen Specter<\/a>, R-Penn., Gonzales said he had only limited involvement in the firings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFpj3FSmI\/AAAAAAAACDo\/LxtJYXhQueE\/s1600-h\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFpj3FSmI\/AAAAAAAACDo\/LxtJYXhQueE\/s200\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055156055794076258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In the case of Iglesias, he said he recalls a conversation with White House political adviser <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_Rove\" target=\"_blank\">Karl Rove<\/a> \u201cin the fall of 2006.\u201d Rove, he said, mentioned concerns about a lack of pursuit of voter fraud cases in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and two other jurisdictions. He said he doesn\u2019t recall the date of the conversation or whether it was a phone or in-person conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said he also has record that he had an Oct. 11 meeting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Bush<\/a> at which the president \u201crelayed to me similar concerns about pursuing voter fraud,\u201d but said he doesn\u2019t recall the conversation. He said the record shows Iglesias was added to the list of those who would be fired sometime between Oct. 17 and Nov. 15, but said he doesn\u2019t know the specific date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI was not responsible for compiling that information,\u201d Gonzales said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he approved Iglesias\u2019 firing \u201cbased upon what I believed to be the consensus recommendation of the senior leadership in the department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But, Gonzales said, he \u201cwas not surprised\u201d that Iglesias was added to the list by senior department staffers because of the complaints he had received from Rove, Bush, and U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., who he said called him to complain in 2005 that Iglesias \u201cwas in over his head\u201d and needed more resources to prosecute \u201cpublic corruption cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Statements shed light on<\/span><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"> timeline of events<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFkD3FSlI\/AAAAAAAACDg\/tLuCa-rzCYY\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFkD3FSlI\/AAAAAAAACDg\/tLuCa-rzCYY\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055155961304795730\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>His statements shed some light on the timeline related to Iglesias\u2019 firing. U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., called Iglesias on Oct. 16. Iglesias alleges <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> inquired about potential sealed indictments in the Bernalillo County Metro Courthouse investigation and pressured him to issue indictments. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wil<\/st1:place><\/st1:city><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">son<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> admits the call but says she didn\u2019t ask about sealed indictments or pressure Iglesias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales says the next day is the first potential day Iglesias was added to the firing list. Then Domenici called Iglesias about the case on Oct. 27. Iglesias alleges the senator also pressured him on indictments, but Domenici says that isn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFQz3FSfI\/AAAAAAAACCw\/hJhyP6s9ULk\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFQz3FSfI\/AAAAAAAACCw\/hJhyP6s9ULk\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055155630592313842\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/special\/554986nm04-15-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> reported this weekend that a conversation between Rove and Domenici took place sometime after the Nov. 6 election, so it must have occurred between Nov. 6 and 15. Sometime in that period, Domenici and Bush also had a conversation about Iglesias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The attorneys were then notified they were being fired on Dec. 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Is it just coincidence that the phone calls from Domenici and Wilson to Iglesias and the conversations between Bush, Rove, Gonzales and Domenici occurred in such close proximity to the November 2006 election? That\u2019s what a bipartisan group of senators want to know, and this morning\u2019s hearing has included some testy exchanges and strong statements of concern from Democrats and Republicans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFZj3FSjI\/AAAAAAAACDQ\/3S4R_PGOXVA\/s1600-h\/Rove,+Karl.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFZj3FSjI\/AAAAAAAACDQ\/3S4R_PGOXVA\/s200\/Rove,+Karl.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055155780916169266\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>It\u2019s noteworthy that Rove was intimately involved in helping <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> keep her seat last year. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was in the fight for her political life and won re-election last year by 861 votes out of more than 211,000 cast. At the time of the October 2006 calls, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, Domenici\u2019s prot\u00e9g\u00e9, had fallen behind in the polls for the first time in the election cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s also noteworthy that a bipartisan group of senators have said today they understand U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president, but it would be highly improper to fire a U.S. attorney for the political reasons alleged by Iglesias, and would compromise the federal law-enforcement system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFkD3FSkI\/AAAAAAAACDY\/ER9t1Jfq7nc\/s1600-h\/Bush,+George.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RieFkD3FSkI\/AAAAAAAACDY\/ER9t1Jfq7nc\/s200\/Bush,+George.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055155961304795714\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>That\u2019s what\u2019s at stake here: Whether Domenici, <st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city>, Bush, Rove and Gonzales compromised or attempted to compromise the integrity of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state> for the sake of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>\u2019s political career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said the department hasn\u2019t politicized any cases, adding that his office took a plea from former Ohio Congressman <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Ney\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Ney<\/a>, a Republican, on felony charges related to the Jack Abramoff scandal weeks before the November 2006 election.
