U.S. Sen. Tom Udall\u2019s<\/a> trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan last week \u201conly reinforced his concerns about the wisdom of escalating the war,\u201d The Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n

Udall said the United States has a \u201cgood general\u201d in charge of its war efforts there, and the senator said he wants the United States and Afghanistan to succeed, but he remains \u201cconcerned with the reliability of our partner in the region,\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a tremendous human, military and financial cost of an open-ended commitment,\u201d Udall said on a call with reporters, according to the newspaper. \u201cTherefore, I remain skeptical of a continued build-up. I\u2019m unconvinced that sending 30,000 more troops into harm\u2019s way improves the situation or advances our national security interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality on the ground is that rebuilding Afghanistan is a monumental effort,\u201d Udall said. \u201cWe can\u2019t do it all. And the more we do, the more dependent they become.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was on a call last week<\/a> with Udall during which he said he remained skeptical but didn\u2019t go into details, but I was unable to take part in Tuesday\u2019s call, during which Udall went into more depth.<\/p>\n
