{"id":1573,"date":"2007-04-10T09:28:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-10T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/abq-councilor-heinrich-might-also-challenge-wilson\/"},"modified":"2007-04-10T09:28:00","modified_gmt":"2007-04-10T15:28:00","slug":"abq-councilor-heinrich-might-also-challenge-wilson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/abq-councilor-heinrich-might-also-challenge-wilson\/","title":{"rendered":"ABQ councilor Heinrich might also challenge Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhutWVy3EDI\/AAAAAAAAB8g\/-XKRt_mbvnk\/s1600-h\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhutWVy3EDI\/AAAAAAAAB8g\/-XKRt_mbvnk\/s200\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051822006345338930\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Soon after I reported Monday that New Mexico Economic Development Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/edd.state.nm.us\/index.php?\/about\/category\/Cabinet%20Secretary%20Rick%20Homans\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Homans<\/a> might run for Congress, I received a call from Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a>, who said he is seriously leaning toward challenging U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M. next year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m actually leaning very much toward moving forward and trying to get the pieces together to do that,\u201d Heinrich told me. \u201cI\u2019m pretty serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich, 35, and his wife have two small boys, and he said he is trying to figure out whether he can juggle his family life and a run for Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich\u2019s announcement sets up a potential Democratic primary between Homans and Heinrich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both are employees of Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>. Heinrich is the natural resources trustee for the state. <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, however, has pledged to support Homans if there\u2019s a primary, a well-placed source tells me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich said he hopes to speak with <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure anyone getting in at this point would predicate me getting out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich, <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city>\u2019s District 6 councilor, was instrumental in pushing <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s minimum wage increase to $7.50 per hour in 2006. He also served as the council\u2019s president that year, and is young and energetic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He\u2019s a more liberal Democrat, while Homans is a moderate.
