{"id":1572,"date":"2007-04-09T16:32:00","date_gmt":"2007-04-09T22:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/city-council-picks-multi-purpose-recreation-center\/"},"modified":"2007-04-09T16:32:00","modified_gmt":"2007-04-09T22:32:00","slug":"city-council-picks-multi-purpose-recreation-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/04\/city-council-picks-multi-purpose-recreation-center\/","title":{"rendered":"City council picks multi-purpose recreation center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rhq_Q3bEs2I\/AAAAAAAAB8Y\/Q50ADs-mtvM\/s1600-h\/Las+Cruces+logo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rhq_Q3bEs2I\/AAAAAAAAB8Y\/Q50ADs-mtvM\/s200\/Las+Cruces+logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051560228525749090\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> city councilors decided today to proceed with the creation of a multipurpose aquatic and recreation facility.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They decided at a work session today to build the multipurpose center, rather than a facility whose focus is a 50-meter, Olympic-sized pool, in part because of pressure from lawmakers who appropriated the funds for the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Several councilors favored using the $18 million from the state to build an initial facility that is primarily an aquatic center, but they agreed to begin with a multipurpose facility and plan for a future expansion that includes an Olympic pool after lawmakers pledged to help with funding for the second phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Some lawmakers said they would provide such help only if the city honored their intent with the first phase \u2013 the creation of a multipurpose facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe want to touch as many lives as positively as we can with health and wellness,\u201d Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, told councilors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The decision allows the city to begin planning and potentially break ground later this year on the facility, which will be located on the corner of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&#038;q=hadley+and+solano,+las+cruces&amp;sll=32.318645,-106.764321&#038;sspn=0.133463,0.2314&amp;layer=&amp;ie=UTF8&#038;z=16&amp;ll=32.317004,-106.76739&#038;spn=0.008342,0.021501&amp;om=1\" target=\"_blank\">Hadley Avenue and Solano Drive<\/a>. The multipurpose facility will include what\u2019s called a \u201cmedium-leisure pool\u201d that includes three lap lanes, slides and a shallow area for children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Councilors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district4.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Trowbridge<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/district6.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a> suggested that city residents pushing for an Olympic pool consider a referendum petition that would tack a bond question onto the November city election and allow city residents to decide whether to implement a small tax increase to pay back bonds used to expand the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Approval of such bonds, Miyagishima suggested, could raise the $5 million that would be necessary to build the multipurpose facility and an Olympic-size pool. Doing it in November would allow the city to build the entire facility at once, rather than adding the pool at a later date, and would cost less than trying to add it on later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is your chance,\u201d Miyagishima said to those who want a larger pool.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Las Cruces city councilors decided today to proceed with the creation of a multipurpose aquatic and recreation facility.
