It produces a hormone that regulates metabolism. Wilson\u2019s thyroid has not functioned since having\u00a0thyroiditis\u00a0fourteen years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe treatment for\u00a0papillary thyroid cancer\u00a0is surgical removal of the thyroid gland followed several weeks later by a dose of radioactive iodine to kill any remaining thyroid cells.\u00a0Side effects or complications are rare. Wilson\u2019s surgery and follow up care will be performed in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModules\u00a0in Wilson\u2019s thyroid were discovered by her doctor during a routine examination. A follow-up biopsy confirmed the diagnosis in mid-March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 37,000 people are diagnosed with thyroid cancer each year in the United States.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former U.S. Rep.
