\"\"<\/a>Supporters of the spaceport tax celebrated its passage this afternoon at an event in Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, but also spoke about the clear division revealed by the 270-vote victory. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cTo Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>: You made the history books this week,\u201d Economic Development Secretary Rick Homans<\/a> said on the steps of Hadley Hall on the New Mexico State University Campus. \u201cNow it\u2019s time to come together.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a>, standing in front of about 100 people, said he understands that county residents will demand accountability and that they have concerns about the project.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe got the message,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 I am here not to gloat, but to say thank you. Thank you for a well-constructed election, for a spirited debate.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he is optimistic.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to make the spaceport work,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be great for Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename> and Southern New Mexico<\/st1:place>, and it\u2019s going to be great for this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Steve Bennett, CEO of Starchaster Industries<\/a>, said it will be even better than that.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to build this beautiful spaceport. I\u2019m going to build beautiful rockets, and together, we\u2019re going to open the frontier of space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Not all who spoke were so joyful. Rep. Mary Helen Garcia<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, told the governor that many of her constituents opposed the spaceport tax because they are poor.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a real clear message,\u201d Garcia told the governor. \u201cHowever, you have taken care of them. I hope you continue to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

But the vast majority expressed their excitement at what\u2019s ahead.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes in government we have to take risks, we have to bet on the future,\u201d said Rep. Jeff Steinborn<\/a>, D-Las Cruces.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a whole new page in history, and I\u2019m just so thrilled I just want to stand up here and say, \u2018Yeah!\u2019\u201d said Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Kent Evans<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
