According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/08031538298newsstate04-08-10.htm\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>, Sloan, a Democrat, doesn\u2019t have to resign, but she\u2019s no longer eligible for re-election in November.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves four Democrats \u2013 Hank Hughes, Andrew Leo Lopez, George J. Galanis and Theresa Becenti-Aguilar \u2013 and one Republican \u2013 Gary J. Montoya \u2013 vying for the right to replace Sloan on the PRC.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan plans to appeal her conviction, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kob.com\/article\/stories\/s1504199.shtml?cat=504\">The Associated Press<\/a>. Sentencing is scheduled for May 20, and she faces up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors alleged that Sloan confronted Brenda Yazzie at Yazzie\u2019s apartment in July, accused her of having an affair with her husband and attacked her with a rock and kicked her. They said Yazzie was bruised and bleeding from a head injury after the assault.<\/p>\n<p>The jury acquitted Sloan of a third charge, misdemeanor criminal damage to property.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 4:50 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The state GOP has called for Sloan\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommissioner\u00a0Sloan received her day in court and was convicted of two felonies. Out of respect for the office she holds and the constituents she was elected to serve,\u00a0Carol Sloan\u00a0should resign immediately,\u201d Chairman Harvey Yates Jr. said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 5:05 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>State Democratic Party Chairman Javier Gonzales is also calling for Sloan\u2019s immediate resignation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have called for Ms. Sloan\u2019s immediate resignation from the PRC,\u201d he said in a news release. \u201cMs. Sloan\u2019s actions are appalling, unacceptable and will not be tolerated by Democrats or anyone else in\u00a0New Mexico. The\u00a0Democratic Party of New Mexico\u00a0expects all\u00a0elected officials\u00a0to abide by a higher standard and work to move our state forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 5:15 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lt.
