Gov. Susana Martinez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among them was Paul Ryan, speaker of the U.S. House. A day that began with rumors that Ryan would endorse Trump instead went in the opposite direction when Ryan\u00a0said he\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t be rushed into a decision.<\/p>\n<p>And asked about Trump&#8217;s criticism of Martinez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/powerpost\/wp\/2016\/05\/25\/paul-ryan-says-he-will-not-be-rushed-into-a-trump-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cLook, I\u2019ll just leave it at this: Susana Martinez is a great governor. She turned deficits into surpluses. She cut taxes. She\u2019s a friend of mine, and\u00a0I think she\u2019s a good governor.\u00a0I will leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The backlash Trump faced was viewed by many as a rejection of a perceived\u00a0attempt to bully\u00a0Republicans who haven&#8217;t endorsed him\u00a0to get in line.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez endorsed Marco Rubio when he was still seeking the GOP presidential nomination, and she&#8217;s refused\u00a0to endorse Trump since he became the party&#8217;s presumptive nominee. Martinez didn&#8217;t attend Trump&#8217;s rally in Albuquerque on Tuesday, saying she was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/05\/24\/politics\/susana-martinez-donald-trump-new-mexico-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\">too busy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump hit back after that\u00a0apparent slight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour governor, she has got to do a better job,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jettloe\/status\/735290767745245184\" target=\"_blank\">s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jettloe\/status\/735290767745245184\" target=\"_blank\">aid<\/a>\u00a0at the rally. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KOBChrisRamirez\/status\/735291580655882241\" target=\"_blank\">complained<\/a> about the state\u2019s economy, crime in Albuquerque, and what he called the high number of Syrian refugees being relocated in\u00a0the state &#8212; a claim that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2016\/05\/trumps-misleading-attack-on-martinez\/\" target=\"_blank\">simply isn&#8217;t true<\/a>. Scott Walker jumped into the fray. He works with Martinez through the Republican Governors Association (RGA) &#8212; she&#8217;s the chair and he&#8217;s the vice chair. The RGA sent out a\u00a0statement from Walker:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom delivering crucial tax reform, standing up to Washington by suing the EPA for federal overreach, turning a deficit into a surplus and making New Mexico the leader in jobs for export growth while increasing the state\u2019s business friendliness, Governor Susana Martinez has effectively driven conservative reforms in a blue state won twice by President Obama, while winning re-election by the largest margin by a Republican in state history,&#8221; Walker said. &#8220;Governor Martinez also has a dedicated record of helping elect conservative governors across the country, and as RGA Chair this year, she is leading the charge in several states that are in dire need of real leadership, just like she has provided in New Mexico.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Martinez, meanwhile, seemed perfectly comfortable defending herself. A\u00a0spokesman said\u00a0the governor wouldn\u2019t be bullied into supporting a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, Donald Trump doesn\u2019t realize Governor Martinez wasn\u2019t elected in 2000, that she has fought for welfare reform, and has strongly opposed the President\u2019s Syrian refugee plan,\u201d said Martinez spokesman Mike Lonergan. \u201cBut the pot shots weren\u2019t about policy, they were about politics. And the governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate until she is convinced that candidate will fight for New Mexicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maritnez, Lonergan said, \u201cdoesn\u2019t care about what Donald Trump says about her \u2013 she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans. She didn\u2019t hear anything about that today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Party of New Mexico, on the other hand, said it agreed, for once, with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s true. Governor Martinez is not doing her job,&#8221; the party said in a news release. &#8220;Her job is to make sure New Mexico prospers, and all we&#8217;ve seen from her administration are attacks on our immigrant communities, a dismal jobs record, and a slew of embarrassing headlines,&#8221; which the party said was &#8220;not unlike Donald Trump.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Under Governor Martinez, New Mexico ranks poorly in child well-being, unemployment, and high school graduation rates,&#8221; the Democratic Party said.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post examined the situation\u00a0with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/05\/25\/once-hailed-as-the-gops-ideal-vp-pick-new-mexicos-susana-martinez-finds-herself-clashing-with-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> that\u00a0began this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Glass-ceiling-breaking. History-making. A future Republican leader and maybe even president.<\/p>\n<p>Embarrassing. Palinesque. Caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on who you talk to or what part of her career you focus on, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) is either a rising star or a fallen one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article went on to explain why the nation&#8217;s first Latina to be elected governor of any state\u00a0is viewed by many as a star &#8212; &#8220;Like, a really big star&#8221; &#8212; and the VP buzz that has followed her for years.
