{"id":153302,"date":"2016-05-24T21:49:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-25T03:49:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=153302"},"modified":"2016-10-12T13:10:57","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T19:10:57","slug":"tensions-high-as-protesters-disrupt-trumps-albuquerque-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/05\/tensions-high-as-protesters-disrupt-trumps-albuquerque-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Tensions high as protesters disrupt Trump&#8217;s Albuquerque rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tensions were high inside and outside the Albuquerque Convention Center\u00a0as presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump held a rally there Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Several times, Demonstrators interrupted Trump&#8217;s speech and were removed.\u00a0There were confrontations outside between Trump supporters and protesters. Shouting and name-calling\u00a0flew in both directions. They stormed toward the convention center doors and were\u00a0met just outside them by police in riot gear. Then <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/blairmiller\/status\/735285087239995392\" target=\"_blank\">a human shield<\/a> of people\u00a0formed between the protesters and police to help calm the situation.<\/p>\n<p>After that, dozens of additional Albuquerque police officers joined the security efforts at the convention center.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Through it all, Trump was&#8230; Trump. Before <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanBoydNM\/status\/735297815727853568\" target=\"_blank\">an estimated crowd of 8,000<\/a>, he\u00a0insulted journalists, calling them <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hollybdc\/status\/735284408769339392\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;dishonest slime.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0He renewed his pledge to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GeoffGrammer\/status\/735292591114063874\" target=\"_blank\">build a wall<\/a> on the U.S.\/Mexico border &#8212; in the state with the highest percentage of people who are Hispanic and Latino. He called U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stevenjldamico\/status\/735281097295159296\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Pocahontas&#8221;<\/a> in a state with a high Native American population.<\/p>\n<p>And, after Republican Gov. Susana Martinez &#8212; who has refused to endorse Trump &#8212; said she was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/05\/24\/politics\/susana-martinez-donald-trump-new-mexico-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\">too busy<\/a> to attend his\u00a0Albuquerque rally, Trump took a couple of shots at her, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your governor, she has got to do a better job,&#8221; Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jettloe\/status\/735290767745245184\" target=\"_blank\">s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jettloe\/status\/735290767745245184\" target=\"_blank\">aid<\/a>. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KOBChrisRamirez\/status\/735291580655882241\" target=\"_blank\">complained<\/a> about the state&#8217;s economy, crime in Albuquerque, and Syrian refugees in the state. He also criticized the high number of people receiving government assistance in New Mexico\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KOBChrisRamirez\/status\/735290684509282305\" target=\"_blank\">joked<\/a> that maybe he should run for governor here.<\/p>\n<p>A Martinez spokesman responded by saying the governor wouldn&#8217;t be bullied into supporting a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Apparently, Donald Trump doesn\u2019t realize Governor Martinez wasn\u2019t elected in 2000, that she has fought for welfare reform, and has strongly opposed the President\u2019s Syrian refugee plan,&#8221; said Martinez spokesman Mike Lonergan. &#8220;But the pot shots weren\u2019t about policy, they were about politics. And the governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate until she is convinced that candidate will fight for New Mexicans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maritnez, Lonergan said, &#8220;doesn\u2019t care about what Donald Trump says about her \u2013 she cares about what he says he will do to help New Mexicans. Some protesters reportedly shouted insults at people waiting in line.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the rally, some protesters lit pro-Trump T-shirts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/blairmiller\/status\/735286210143223808\" target=\"_blank\">on fire.<\/a>\u00a0As tensions increased after the rally,\u00a0some people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CalebJamesKOB\/status\/735300470428700672\" target=\"_blank\">threw burning T-shirts and other items<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RussContreras\/status\/735303162039435264\" target=\"_blank\">at police<\/a>, reportedly threw rocks and possibly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CalebJamesKOB\/status\/735301988523474944\" target=\"_blank\">broke windows<\/a> at the convention center, and tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RussContreras\/status\/735302298625183744\" target=\"_blank\">barge through the convention center doors<\/a> at people still inside. It&#8217;s also noteworthy that some protests <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shaun505\/status\/735305669352513536\" target=\"_blank\">remained peaceful throughout<\/a>. Some demonstrators\u00a0thanked Albuquerque police officers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CalebJamesKOB\/status\/735309999627329536\" target=\"_blank\">for their service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the rally ended, Albuquerque police tweeted this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p>\nAppears that most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a> protestors have left &amp; remaining contingent is only looking to cause trouble &amp; be destructive<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Albuquerque Police (@ABQPOLICE) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABQPOLICE\/status\/735319218036543488\">May 25, 2016<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>After the rally, Albuquerque City Council President Dan Lewis, a Republican, sent a statement to the media condemning\u00a0the violence &#8212; and blaming\u00a0left-leaning groups that were part of the protests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The violence that we&#8217;re seeing this evening is absolutely unacceptable, and it is not the fault of Donald Trump, his campaign, or the attendees at the rally this evening,&#8221; Lewis said in a statement released by his office. &#8220;It is directly the result of so called public interest groups, such as ProgressNM and the Southwest Organizing Project [SWOP], fomenting hate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These organizations this evening devolved from community action groups to hate groups by every usual measure,&#8221; Lewis said. &#8220;This was not a protest &#8212; it was a riot that was the result of a mob trying to cause damage and injury to public property and innocent citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceably assemble.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But others who were in the crowd said SWOP and ProgressNow New Mexico organizers were among those working to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fbihop\/status\/735354417516584960\" target=\"_blank\">keep the protests peaceful<\/a>. SWOP Executive Director Javier Benavidez is the man shown in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shaun505\/status\/735281075719573505\/video\/1\" target=\"_blank\">the video tweet<\/a>\u00a0that&#8217;s embedded above being removed from inside Trump&#8217;s rally for peacefully disrupting the event.<\/p>\n<p>And New Mexico State Police Chief Pete\u00a0Kassetas, whose officers were on scene during the Trump rally, had a different take than Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People protesting at the event weren&#8217;t the problem,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kob.com\/politics-news\/albuquerque-donald-trump-protests-were-mostly-peaceful-but-unruly-people-caused-late-violence\/4150343\/?cat=500#.V0ZTN_krLct\" target=\"_blank\">Kassetas\u00a0said<\/a>, adding that the violence &#8220;had nothing to do with that peaceful protest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Espa\u00f1ola, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton&#8217;s husband, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, rallied her supporters at a peaceful event:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p>Former President Bill Clinton speaks to a crowd at the Plaza de Espanola in Espanola, NM, \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9lasdiaO9j\">https:\/\/t.co\/9lasdiaO9j<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/g0tfZPJpNR\">pic.twitter.com\/g0tfZPJpNR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ABQJournal Photo (@ABQJournalPhoto) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABQJournalPhoto\/status\/735291046297538560\">May 25, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>This breaking news article has been updated with new information.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some protests were peaceful.
