{"id":15262,"date":"2010-04-01T14:08:33","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T20:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=15262"},"modified":"2010-04-01T14:12:21","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T20:12:21","slug":"nmsu-regents-raise-tuition-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/04\/nmsu-regents-raise-tuition-fees\/","title":{"rendered":"NMSU regents raise tuition and other fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8560\" title=\"NMSU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/NMSU.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The New Mexico State University <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/boardofregents\/\">Board of Regents<\/a> voted today raise tuition 8 percent for in-state undergrads and 10.1 percent for non-resident undergrads.<\/p>\n<p>That amounts to $201 more per semester for full-time, resident undergraduate students and $765 more per semester for non-resident undergrads. The regents also raised tuition on graduate students \u2013 8.3 percent, or $222 per semester, for resident students and 10 percent, or $777 per semester, for non-resident students.<\/p>\n<p>The increases were necessary, according to a news release from the university, to help offset a reduction in state funding. State funding for NMSU\u2019s main campus in Las Cruces was cut by 9.8 percent, or $12.3 million, this year. According to the release, that was the largest state funding reduction for any four-year institution in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a challenging financial situation requiring bold action to fulfill our fundamental promise of excellence to our students,\u201d NMSU President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmsu.edu\/president\/\">Barbara Couture<\/a> said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>She added that cuts will still be necessary and will be \u201cachieved through central and\u00a0departmental budget cuts\u00a0and allocations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NMSU community college will see tuition increases as well \u2013 9.5 percent at NMSU Alamogordo, 7.5 percent at Do\u00f1a Ana Community College and 6.9 percent at NMSU Grants. There\u2019s no increase at NMSU Carlsbad for \u201cin-district residents,\u201d the release states.<\/p>\n<p>The regents also voted to increase housing rates and meal plans 3 percent.
