\"\"<\/a>Supporters of the presidential campaign of Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> are promoting their candidate\u2019s netroots<\/a> strength after a recent and surprising victory in an online contest. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was recently picked to be the Democratic Party\u2019s nominee for president in the Presidential March Madness<\/a> contest sponsored by the left-leaning ProgressNow Action<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The online contest, modeled after the bracket for the NCAA basketball tournament, allowed people to vote only if they entered their e-mail addresses. More than 30,000 voted.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Washington for Richardson<\/a> blogger Ken Camp said the victory shows that \u201cRichardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s online supporters\u2026 are stronger than the formidable netroots machines that we\u2019re hearing that other candidates have put together.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Rudy Giuliani<\/a> won the contest for the Republican Party nomination.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, ranked as the fourth seed in the Democratic bracket, beat Al Gore \u2013 who\u2019s not running for president \u2013 in the first round, then Hillary Clinton<\/a> in the second round. In the final round, he knocked off Barack Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> supporter and blogger Emmett O\u2019Connell<\/a> wrote on the site America for Richardson<\/a> that beating Obama was a shock.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cHoly freakin\u2019 crap. I was resigned to losing out to Obama in the final round,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBeating Gore made sense. Despite his popularity, he isn\u2019t actually running. Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is so hated online, beating her in the next round made total sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cBut we beat Obama, which totally blew me away,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWow.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

<\/span>Winning the contest wasn\u2019t something Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign ever mentioned or pushed on its Web site or e-mails. The victory was entirely driven by grassroots supporters.<\/p>\n
