{"id":15092,"date":"2010-03-29T01:44:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T07:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=15092"},"modified":"2010-03-30T06:44:53","modified_gmt":"2010-03-30T12:44:53","slug":"new-poll-shows-turner-weh-closest-to-denish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/03\/new-poll-shows-turner-weh-closest-to-denish\/","title":{"rendered":"New poll shows Turner, Weh closest to Denish"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15093\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Turner-and-Weh.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Turner and Weh\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" class=\"size-full\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Republican gubernatorial candidates Allen Weh (left, courtesy photo) and Doug Turner (right, photo by Heath Haussamen).<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Domenici counters with his own poll showing him leading in the GOP primary<\/h4>\n<p>An independent poll released this weekend shows all five Republican gubernatorial candidates trailing Democratic candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianedenish.com\/\">Diane Denish<\/a> in potential head-to-head contests, with only <a href=\"http:\/\/turnerforgovernor.com\/\">Doug Turner<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allenweh2010.com\/\">Allen Weh<\/a> holding Denish under 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, following the release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/elections2\/election_2010\/election_2010_governor_elections\/new_mexico\/election_2010_new_mexico_governor\">Rasmussen Reports poll<\/a> that wasn\u2019t favorable to Republican hopeful <a href=\"http:\/\/domeniciforgovernor.com\/\">Pete Domenici Jr.<\/a>, Domenici\u2019s campaign released its own poll showing him leading the other GOP candidates in the primary race.<\/p>\n<p>The Rasmussen poll had Denish leading Turner 43-34 percent, Weh 45-35 percent, Domenici 52-35 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/susanamartinez2010.com\/\">Susana Martinez<\/a> 51-32 percent, and <a href=\"http:\/\/janiceforgovernor.com\/\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a> 52-30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 500 likely voters was conducted March 24 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>Denish hasn\u2019t released a statement about the poll. But Turner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/posted.php?id=161381232571&amp;share_id=112215912124486&amp;comments=1#s112215912124486\">on Facebook<\/a>, was quick to tout the poll, saying it \u201cshows me as the top GOP candidate to defeat Denish in the general election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Weh put out a news release stating that the poll shows that \u201ccandidates who are viewed as political insiders and career politicians \u2018have a long way to go\u2019\u201d while he and Turner \u201care within striking distance of the well-known and well-funded Democrat Lt. Governor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With his \u201cpolitical insiders and career politicians\u201d remark, Weh is referring to Domenici, whose father is a former U.S. senator; Martinez, Do\u00f1a Ana County\u2019s district attorney; and Arnold-Jones, who is a state representative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this poll, the lieutenant governor stays above the magical 50-percent mark when the voters only have a choice between her and other\u00a0elected officials\u00a0and politicians,\u201d Weh said in the release. \u201cDenish is very beatable when the voters have a real choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Darren White, the former Bernalillo County sheriff and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/11\/white-endorses-martinez-in-gubernatorial-race\/\">vocal Martinez supporter<\/a>, was quick with a response on Twitter, pointing out that Weh was the state GOP chairman for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllen Weh for Governor campaign say new poll shows NM voters favor businesspeople like Allen, not political insiders,\u201d White wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/darrenpwhite\/status\/11163667335\">one tweet<\/a>. \u201cMan, they better hope the voters don\u2019t confuse him with the other Allen Weh who was the NM Republican Party Chair for 5 years,\u201d he wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/darrenpwhite\/status\/11163672644\">a second tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s noteworthy that, of the GOP gubernatorial candidates, only Turner and Weh have run TV ads (watch Weh\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/03\/video-weh%e2%80%99s-first-tv-ad-begins-airing-this-weekend\/\">here<\/a> and Turner\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/12\/video-another-turner-ad-up-on-cable\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>The poll also tested the favorability ratings of each candidate in the governor\u2019s race, and found that Denish had by far the highest number of people say they have a \u201cvery favorable\u201d view or her \u2013 28 percent. Those surveyed most often had opinions about Denish and Domenici \u2013 which some pollsters have said is largely due to his father\u2019s long career as the state\u2019s senior senator \u2013 while somewhere between 36 and 43 percent of those surveyed said they weren\u2019t sure about the other candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Denish also had the highest number of people say they have a \u201cvery unfavorable\u201d view of her \u2013 19 percent.<\/p>\n<h3>Domenici touts his own poll<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_13322\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Domenici-Jr-Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Domenici Jr, Pete\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" class=\"size-full\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pete Domenici Jr.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Domenici didn\u2019t put out a statement in response to the Rasmussen poll. Instead, he released his own poll that shows him leading in the GOP gubernatorial primary. Domenici had 30 percent of support in the poll to Weh\u2019s 21 percent, Martinez\u2019s 17 percent, Turner\u2019s 8.5 percent and Arnold-Jones\u2019 4.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The poll was conducted by Dialing Services, LLC of Roswell.
