A well-organized group that has pushed for more city pools in recent years immediately tried to stake its claim to the funding and is pushing hard for an Olympic-sized, 50-meter pool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many lawmakers have pushed back, saying a smaller, 25-meter pool would leave money for other purposes including basketball courts and weight-lifting areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Las Cruces City Council is set to decide on April 9 the direction the facility will take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhFyVADZmJI\/AAAAAAAAB2I\/1UY2gdgj9xM\/s1600-h\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhFyVADZmJI\/AAAAAAAAB2I\/1UY2gdgj9xM\/s200\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048942362376116370\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, organized all <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> lawmakers last year to pitch in for the project, and also secured a pledge from Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> for $5 million. It was viewed at the time as an unusually efficient way to pool together and fund a major project that could be built quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Capital outlay is usually appropriated in smaller amounts and stored up over time toward a project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A number of residents showed up to Monday\u2019s council meeting to push for the 50-meter pool. Four lawmakers also showed up, and three of them pushed for the creation of a multipurpose facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think the intent was very clear, and I hope you\u2019ll honor that intent,\u201d Cervantes told councilors. \u201cThe goal was to have a very broad, multipurpose recreation center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=277&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Kay Papen<\/a> and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=191&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Helen Garcia<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, agreed. But Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=316&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joni Gutierrez<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, sided with the Olympic poll advocates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhFyVQDZmKI\/AAAAAAAAB2Q\/Y8FhgzcQxP0\/s1600-h\/Gutierrez,+Joni.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RhFyVQDZmKI\/AAAAAAAAB2Q\/Y8FhgzcQxP0\/s200\/Gutierrez,+Joni.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5048942366671083682\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cMy intent was a swimming pool as a first priority,\u201d Gutierrez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All expressed willingness to consider appropriating additional state money for the project, and discussed the possibility of building the center in phases. Gutierrez suggested starting with the pool and adding on other components later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be happy to give you money again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Garcia suggested that those pushing for a larger pool might come up with additional funds. Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/las-cruces.org\/council\/district6.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a> also mentioned the possibility of bonds to expand the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The decision rests with the council, not legislators. At next week\u2019s meeting, councilors will give city staff direction on how to prioritize various components they want included in the facility, which is to be built on the corner of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&amp;q=hadley+and+solano,+las+cruces&#038;sll=32.318645,-106.764321&amp;sspn=0.133463,0.2314&#038;layer=&amp;amp;amp;amp;ie=UTF8&#038;z=16&amp;ll=32.317004,-106.76739&#038;spn=0.008342,0.021501&amp;om=1\" target=\"_blank\">Hadley Avenue and Solano Drive<\/a>.
