Tracking the candidates, political committees and nonprofits that are making this presidential election the most expensive in history.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/politics\/buying-president-2016?utm_campaign=syndication&amp;utm_source=yahoo-news&amp;utm_medium=taxonomy-link\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to read more stories in this investigation.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>In all, Cruz and two supportive super PACs \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results\/2016\/03\/club-for-growth-endorses-ted-cruz-221129\" target=\"_blank\">Club for Growth<\/a>, an anti-tax organization that endorsed him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19627\/pro-cruz-super-pac-plays-offense-indiana\" target=\"_blank\">Trusted Leadership PAC<\/a>, a big-money vehicle designed to boost the U.S. senator from Texas \u2014 spent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19617\/ad-spending-indianas-republican-presidential-primary\" target=\"_blank\">more than $4 million<\/a> on television and radio advertising in Indiana, according to data provided to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Public Integrity<\/a> by The Tracking Firm, a nonpartisan media tracking company headquartered in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the spending spree, Cruz won only about 405,000 votes, finishing in a distant second behind Trump, the front-runner who ultimately won about 590,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s campaign spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19617\/ad-spending-indianas-republican-presidential-primary\" target=\"_blank\">about $870,000<\/a> on TV and radio advertising in Indiana, according to The Tracking Firm. These figures don&#8217;t include costs associated with online ads, direct mail, field staff, salaries, events or other expenditures.<\/p>\n<p>During his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4591930\/donald-trump-60000-negative-ads\" target=\"_blank\">victory speech Tuesday night<\/a>, Trump praised his own campaign&#8217;s thriftiness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s something that makes me feel really, really very good,&#8221; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been 60,000 negative ads [against me],&#8221; Trump continued. &#8220;The people are so smart. They don&#8217;t buy it. They get it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19628\/conservatives-cant-stop-trump-indiana-despite-last-ditch-ad-blitz\" target=\"_blank\">more than 64,000 TV ads<\/a> have attacked Trump in some fashion as of Monday, including about 8,000 from Democratic Party front-runner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2015\/04\/12\/17107\/12-things-know-about-hillary-clinton\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19623\/tv-ads-have-attacked-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Public Integrity review<\/a> of data provided by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kantarmedia.com\/us\/our-solutions\/advertising-monitoring-and-evaluation\/political\" target=\"_blank\">Kantar Media\/CMAG<\/a>, a firm that monitors advertising on broadcast television and national \u2014 but not local \u2014 cable.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After his loss to Trump in Indiana, Cruz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2016\/05\/03\/cruz-suffers-devastating-loss-indiana-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\">quit<\/a> of the presidential race. Ohio Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2015\/07\/21\/17209\/9-things-know-about-john-kasich\" target=\"_blank\">John Kasich<\/a>, who did not actively campaign in Indiana, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2016\/05\/04\/john-kasich-republican-presidential-campaign\/83913370\/\" target=\"_blank\">expected to end<\/a>\u00a0his campaign today as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>(NMPolitics.net editor&#8217;s note: This article was published by the Center for Public Integrity before Kasich dropped out <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/05\/a-quick-change-of-mind-kasich-drops-out-trump-is-gop-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\">on Wednesday<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An anti-Trump super PAC called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/02\/29\/19382\/chicago-cubs-co-owner-takes-brickbat-trumps-immigration-record\" target=\"_blank\">Our Principles PAC<\/a> \u2014 which did not endorse either Cruz or Kasich \u2014 spent an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19617\/ad-spending-indianas-republican-presidential-primary\" target=\"_blank\">$1.2 million on ads<\/a> in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Associated Press, Trump is now <a href=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/2016\/delegate-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\">fewer than 200 delegates away<\/a> from the magic number of 1,237 needed to officially clinch the GOP presidential nomination without a contested convention.<\/p>\n<p>In Indiana&#8217;s Democratic primary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2015\/04\/30\/17261\/12-things-know-about-bernie-sanders\" target=\"_blank\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> scored an upset victory, defeating Clinton by about 30,000 votes, or 5 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton did not spend a dime on TV or radio advertising in Indiana, while Sanders spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/2016\/05\/03\/19628\/conservatives-cant-stop-trump-indiana-despite-last-ditch-ad-blitz\" target=\"_blank\">about $1.7 million<\/a> \u2014 or about $5.20 per vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been clear all along that she&#8217;s the establishment candidate,&#8221; Sanders campaign spokesman Michael Briggs said of Clinton. &#8220;Advertising on television is one way we have to compete with that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Briggs said that Sanders, who <a href=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/2016\/delegate-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\">badly trails Clinton in the delegate race<\/a>, would press on to give voters in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreenpapers.com\/P16\/ccad.phtml\" target=\"_blank\">remaining contests<\/a> &#8220;the same kind of choice that people in other states have already gotten.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Briggs stressed, we &#8220;like our chances in a lot of those states.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Clinton, however, remains poised to win the Democratic nomination thanks to her nearly insurmountable delegate lead.
