Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> was funny and competent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart<\/a> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

During an appearance that was technically tied to the paperback release of his book \u201cBetween Worlds: The Making of an American Life,\u201d Richardson managed to get in his familiar points about experience and policy while also cracking a few jokes and taking Stewart\u2019s shots in a lighthearted manner.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Stewart started by asking Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, \u201cWhat will be the secret that derails your campaign?\u201d Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> didn\u2019t really answer, but said his campaign has shown progress.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI started below the margin of error, and now I\u2019m moving up,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 We\u2019re in the second tier, but I\u2019m doing better.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

When discussing the world leaders with whom he\u2019s negotiated, Richardson<\/st1:city> mentioned Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and North Korea<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s leader.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThat all worked out very well,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> described meeting with Hussein a decade ago and securing the release of American hostages. The way he tells the story, he offended Saddam by crossing his legs and showing the former Iraqi dictator the bottom of his shoe \u2013 a grave insult in Arab culture that could have resulted in his death.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was able to recover from the misstep and secure the release of the hostages.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s an absolutely wild story,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cWere you gellin\u2019 at the time?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

It was a reference to Dr. Scholl\u2019s gel insoles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I was,\u201d Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The money game<\/span><\/p>\n

On the money front, Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is just over $100,000 short of his goal of raising $500,000 before Saturday\u2019s midnight reporting deadline, but he has plenty of time left and will likely get there. The reports, filed next month, will be the first major indicator of the financial health of campaigns.<\/p>\n

Many analysts think candidates will have to raise $15-20 million by the end of June, the next reporting deadline, to stay competitive. Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> apparently doesn\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

His campaign has refused to release any information to the media about how much he has raised, but Steve Terrell<\/a> is reporting on his blog today that he has seen a fundraising letter the governor\u2019s campaign sent out. The letter implies that Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> had raised $3.22 million as of March 22 in setting a goal of raising another $2.7 million, bringing his total to $5.92 million, by the end of June.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Why $5.92 million instead of $6 million? Who knows.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Either way, expect the cash given to Hillary, Obama and Edwards to dwarf that given to Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n
