(<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\">photo cc info<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New Mexico&#8217;s June 7 Republican presidential primary may not matter after all.<\/p>\n<p>A little more than a week ago, Ted Cruz and John Kasich announced <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/04\/cruz-kasich-deal-to-stop-trump-may-not-mean-much\/\" target=\"_blank\">a deal<\/a> aimed at stopping Donald Trump from securing the nomination. Kasich agreed to not campaign in Indiana &#8212; which we now know Cruz viewed as his do-or-die state &#8212; and Cruz said he would not campaign in upcoming primaries Oregon and New Mexico.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That set up a potential Trump-Kasich battle for New Mexico that had some\u00a0thinking the state might see GOP primary action &#8212; even though it\u00a0quickly became clear the deal <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/04\/cruz-kasich-deal-to-stop-trump-may-not-mean-much\/\" target=\"_blank\">might\u00a0not mean much<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u00a0Cruz lost Indiana badly on Tuesday and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/05\/03\/politics\/ted-cruz-drops-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">dropped out of the race<\/a>. GOP leaders and many in the media declared Trump the party&#8217;s presumptive nominee even as Kasich vowed to continue fighting.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1067315393\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Kasich&#8217;s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0chief strategist, John Weaver, said the GOP &#8220;is facing a clear choice between positive solutions that can win in November and a darker path that will solve nothing and lead to Hillary Clinton in the White House, a Democrat Senate and a liberal Supreme Court.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asked how competitive Kasich could be with Trump in New Mexico and other remaining primary states, a campaign spokesman referred NMPolitics.net to Weaver&#8217;s statement: &#8220;As long as it remains possible, Governor Kasich will fight for the higher path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ted Cruz ran a strong campaign, stood for conservative principles and exposed a lot about Donald Trump,&#8221; Weaver said. &#8220;Governor Kasich will continue to campaign and offer the voters a clear choice for our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, with Trump nearing\u00a0the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination before the party&#8217;s July convention, other Republicans declared the race over. Trump has won about\u00a010\u00a0times the number of delegates Kasich has secured.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reince\/status\/727665447684820992\" target=\"_blank\">tweet<\/a> came from Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, moments after Cruz dropped out:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a> will be presumptive <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOP\">@GOP<\/a> nominee, we all need to unite and focus on defeating <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HillaryClinton\">@HillaryClinton<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NeverClinton?src=hash\">#NeverClinton<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reince Priebus (@Reince) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reince\/status\/727665447684820992\">May 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And the Republican Party of New Mexico sent out its own Trump-supporting statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Donald Trump&#8217;s win in Indiana and Ted Cruz dropping out, Trump has functionally secured the nomination,&#8221; said spokesman Tucker Keene. &#8220;We look forward to seeing Donald Trump in New Mexico and working with our nominee to defeat Hillary Clinton in November and delivering our five electoral votes for the Republicans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Weaver <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JWGOP\/status\/727668905376813056\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> a response to Priebus:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p>\nAppreciate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reince\">@Reince<\/a> &amp; his hard work for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GOP\">@GOP<\/a>, but until someone has 1,237 bound delegates there is no presumptive nominee. CA here we come.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Weaver (@JWGOP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JWGOP\/status\/727668905376813056\">May 4, 2016<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>That made California, whose Republicans, like New Mexico&#8217;s, vote on June 7, one of two states Kasich&#8217;s campaign has been talking about\u00a0lately. The other is Oregon. Even the campaign&#8217;s email\u00a0to NMPolitics.net didn&#8217;t mention any specific plans for New Mexico or indicate\u00a0that the campaign views the state as important.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Kasich&#8217;s only hope between now and June 7 is to stop Trump from reaching 1,237 delegates. It&#8217;s a strategy\u00a0many\u00a0Republicans and media analysts\u00a0think is hopeless.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s win in Indiana &#8220;certified Trump\u2019s inevitability, positioning him to easily accumulate the 1,237 delegates required to secure the nomination next month and avert a contested convention,&#8221; the Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/cruz-quits-race-trump-win-in-indiana-puts-him-in-sight-of-nomination\/2016\/05\/03\/316d0364-10b6-11e6-8967-7ac733c56f12_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-banner-main_indiana-1015pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>. Kasich may stay in the race, &#8220;but his odds of winning New Mexico \u2013 or even forcing a convention fight \u2013 are infinitesimal,&#8221; the Albuquerque Journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/767765\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Several GOP presidential candidates &#8212; including Trump, Cruz, and Kasich &#8212; will still appear on New Mexico&#8217;s primary\u00a0ballot. Cruz and several others quite\u00a0the race after the deadline to drop off the ballot in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Democrat Bernie Sanders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/live-updates-hillary-clinton-bernie-sanders-compete-in-indiana-democratic-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\">defeated opponent Hillary Clinton<\/a> in Indiana on Tuesday, keeping Clinton\u00a0from declaring final victory in a race\u00a0he has vowed to stay in until the Democrats&#8217; convention. Clinton announced last week that she was <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/04\/clinton-hires-staff-in-nm-ahead-of-states-june-7-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\">hiring three campaign staffers in New Mexico<\/a>.\u00a0Sanders&#8217; Tuesday win makes it more likely there will still be a primary race when Democrats vote here on June 7.<\/p>\n<p>As the Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/05\/02\/yes-bernie-sanders-can-force-a-contested-convention-that-doesnt-mean-he-can-win-one\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported Monday<\/a>, Sanders may be able to force a contested Democratic Party convention, but that doesn&#8217;t mean he can win it.
