{"id":1466,"date":"2007-03-26T08:17:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-26T14:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/documents-appear-to-contradict-gonzales-claim-of-limited-involvement-in-u-s-attorney-firings\/"},"modified":"2007-03-26T08:17:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-26T14:17:00","slug":"documents-appear-to-contradict-gonzales-claim-of-limited-involvement-in-u-s-attorney-firings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/documents-appear-to-contradict-gonzales-claim-of-limited-involvement-in-u-s-attorney-firings\/","title":{"rendered":"Documents appear to contradict Gonzales&#8217; claim of limited involvement in U.S. attorney firings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RgfWKi_zkhI\/AAAAAAAABvE\/FMzzh_QqFLk\/s1600-h\/Gonzales,+Alberto.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RgfWKi_zkhI\/AAAAAAAABvE\/FMzzh_QqFLk\/s200\/Gonzales,+Alberto.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5046237384173392402\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Support for U.S. Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/ag\/aggonzalesbio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Alberto Gonzales<\/a> continued to be stripped away over the weekend as documents released Friday evening show that he was more involved in the firings of eight <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorneys than he previously admitted.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It was another in a long series of contradictions, withheld facts and backtracking by the Department of Justice that have caused the situation to explode into full-blown scandal, but is, to date, the first contradictory statement made by the attorney general himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said during a March 13 news conference, in explaining that he had only a limited role in the firings, that he \u201cnever saw documents (related to the firing of the attorneys.) We never had a discussion about where things stood.\u201d But documents reveal that he attended an hour-long meeting on Nov. 27, 2006, days before the firings, at which he approved the department\u2019s plan for executing the firings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The department quickly tried to spin the situation by saying there\u2019s no evidence Gonzales discussed who was being fired, but only that he talked about how it would be done. At this point, that explanation rings hollow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RgfWKy_zkiI\/AAAAAAAABvM\/f5kvqW_Jh5A\/s1600-h\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RgfWKy_zkiI\/AAAAAAAABvM\/f5kvqW_Jh5A\/s200\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5046237388468359714\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Among those who were fired was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Iglesias_%28attorney%29\" target=\"_blank\">David Iglesias<\/a>, who was <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney. He has accused the Bush Administration of firing him for political reasons after he refused pressure from U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., who he says tried to pressure him to speed indictments in a public corruption probe in time to sway voters in the November 2006 election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/specter.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arlen Specter<\/a>, R-Penn. and a member of the Judiciary Committee, told the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070326\/ap_on_go_co\/fired_prosecutors;_ylt=Att9.6D82PYsqQtUX4TbX7vMWM0F\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> that the documents \u201cappear to contradict\u201d Gonzales\u2019 earlier statement, but said he\u2019ll wait for Gonzales\u2019 April 17 testimony before the committee before he passes judgment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">If Gonzales \u201chas not been candid and truthful, that\u2019s a very compelling reason for him to not stay on,\u201d Specter told the news service.
