Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer about the same day Edwards and John Kerry lost the 2004 presidential race, and they waited for news that her recovery was complete before he began his second presidential run this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But there\u2019s always a chance cancer will return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe campaign goes on strongly,\u201d John Edwards said during the news conference. \u201cWhen this happens, you have a choice. New Mexico Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> is generally considered fourth among those who are in the race. In addition, Richardson and Edwards are considered the two most likely to win the early caucuses in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Before the announcement, there had been widespread speculation that Edwards might suspend or quit his campaign, which would have greatly benefited <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. That apparently won\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m absolutely ready for this,\u201d Elizabeth Edwards said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The cancer relapse was found after Elizabeth Edwards cracked a rib this week. A scan revealed the malignant tumor in a rib. Bone tumors are not curable, but they are treatable. She will have cancer for the rest of her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe key is to keep your head up and keep moving, be strong,\u201d John Edwards said. \u201cWe intend to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Elizabeth Edwards said the cancer is, at this point, asymptomatic, and she doesn\u2019t expect her life to be significantly different for 2-3 years, though she said medication may slow her a bit. The two are now headed to the East Coast and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">California<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> for campaign stops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">John Edwards has a great deal of support in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. His most visible ally is former Attorney General and congressional candidate Patricia Madrid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 12:55 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>\u2019s campaign released this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBarbara and I send our thoughts and prayers to Elizabeth and John as they deal with this latest challenge. <st1:city st=\"on\">Elizabeth<\/st1:City> has been an inspiration and role model to all of us with her courageous and very public fight against breast cancer,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> said. \u201cI am hopeful and optimistic that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Elizabeth<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> will continue to win her fight.
