(Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Update, 7:05 p.m.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The party is recounting the numbers in both the lieutenant governor and land commissioner races because so many candidates are close to 20 percent, the party\u2019s spokesman says.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update, 7 p.m.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Col\u00f3n has this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m honored by this nomination and humbled that so many Democrats from all corners of New Mexico are supporting our campaign because they share my belief that government should be in the business of helping people. Democratic values are much more than cheap campaign rhetoric. They make a difference in people\u2019s lives. I know, because I\u2019ve lived those values.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And Diane Denish, the party\u2019s uncontested nominee for governor, said this in a release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople ask me why I would want to be governor when times are so tough. I tell them because now is when it matters most. Times are tough, no doubt about it &#8211; but New Mexicans are tougher. We can\u2019t rely on\u00a0Wall Street\u00a0bailouts. We have to pull together like a family and kick-start the economic recovery ourselves. We must help small businesses expand by cutting red tape and invest in our workforce so that we can compete for the high-wage jobs of the future.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Original post<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the Democratic lieutenant governor\u2019s race, only Brian Col\u00f3n and Lawrence Rael qualified today to appear on the ballot, and in the land commissioner race only one candidate \u2013 Ray Powell \u2013 topped the 20 percent threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the full results:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lieutenant governor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Brian Col\u00f3n: 34.3 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Lawrence Rael: 21.9 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Joe Campos: 19.9 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Jerry Ortiz y Pino: 18.6 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Linda Lopez: 5 percent<\/p>\n<p><strong>Land commissioner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ray Powell: 44.4 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Harry Montoya: 19.32 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sandy Jones: 18.6 percent<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mike Anaya: 17.6 percent<\/p>\n<p>As is the case with Republicans, Democratic candidates who didn\u2019t get 20 percent and want to stay on the ballot can do so by collecting more signatures \u2013 but because there are so many more Democrats than Republicans in the state, it\u2019s a much more difficult task for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The number a candidate has to turn in is based on the number of people who voted in their party\u2019s last primary for governor.
