(<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\">photo cc info<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An effort by some U.S. Border Patrol agents in Southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas to have\u00a0their local union reject the national union&#8217;s endorsement of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump has failed.<\/p>\n<p>The Local\u00a01929 union met behind closed doors in El Paso on Tuesday\u00a0evening. After the meeting, the national Border Patrol union <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BPUnion\/status\/720060854842949633\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a>, &#8220;Vote failed. Support of endorsement stands.&#8221; The Local 1929 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StuHarris1929\/status\/720059574997422080\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted confirmation<\/a>: &#8220;The membership of Local 1929 has voted to continue its support for NBPC&#8217;s endorsement of Donald Trump for President.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The vote was close &#8212; 14-13 in favor of continuing to support Trump, according to an El Paso Times reporter&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BorundaDaniel\/status\/720066898927292416\" target=\"_blank\">tweet<\/a>. Stu Harris, the local union&#8217;s vice president, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elpasotimes.com\/videos\/news\/local\/2016\/04\/12\/82963128\/\" target=\"_blank\">declined to answer journalists&#8217; questions<\/a>\u00a0after the vote, saying interviews would be conducted on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>As the El Paso Times <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/04\/local-border-patrol-agents-challenge-unions-trump-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported Monday<\/a>, some local agents weren&#8217;t happy with <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/ballot-box\/presidential-races\/274699-border-patrol-union-endorses-trump\" target=\"_blank\">the Trump endorsement<\/a>. They\u00a0gathered letters from more than 20 community leaders in support of their efforts, including two Democrats from Southern New Mexico &#8212;\u00a0state Rep. Bill McCamley, D-Las Cruces, and former Las Cruces City Councilor Nathan Small, a Democratic candidate for a state House seat this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons that Las Cruces and El Paso are safe cities, with lower levels of violence compared to peer communities, is because of the trust developed between law enforcement and local communities,\u201d Small\u2019s letter stated. \u201cThis trust is built from mutual respect developed through years of outstanding service by law enforcement and a commitment to community engagement.
