Combined, this wage increase and the $52 million in tax cuts that I signed into law today are a major victory for working New Mexicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=S&#038;type=++&amp;number=324&#038;Submit=Search&amp;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 324<\/a>, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=250\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Altamirano<\/a>, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">D-Silver<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">City<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, raises the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour in January 2008 and $7.50 per hour a year after that. It does not allow automatic cost-of-living increases and exempts agricultural workers. It prevents cities and counties that haven\u2019t already raised their minimum wages above the state\u2019s from doing so until 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 8:20 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lt. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> had this to say:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn his Inaugural address, Governor Richardson put a verbal exclamation point on his insistence that the Legislature pass a bill to increase minimum wage this session, and I applaud Senate President Pro Tem Altamirano and House Speaker Lujan, along with legislators from both sides of the aisle, for doing just that,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m proud to be part of an administration that puts an emphasis on and is willing to invest in social capital \u2013 the people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> who deserve more equitable pay for a hard day\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A compromise on raising the state\u2019s minimum wage is now headed to the governor for signature.
