Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgovernor.state.nm.us\/\">Diane Denish<\/a> signed into law today a bill that will create a publicly accessible, online database of financial information from government agencies in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=195&amp;year=10\">Senate Bill 195<\/a>, sponsored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SSRUE\">Sander Rue<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, calls for the new Web site to be online by July 1, 2011. The database will include the names of exempt employees but not classified employees<\/p>\n<p>Rue said the so-called \u201cSunshine Portal\u201d will be more than a Web site for centralized, convenient and freely accessible information about government finances. He said it will allow citizens the access they need to do their civic duty of overseeing government.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14179\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14179\" title=\"Rue, Sander\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Rue-Sander.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sander Rue<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI am most excited because we will get more public input into how state government should be run,\u201d Rue said in a news release after the bill was signed. \u201cThey will be able to go online and easily see budget line-items and see how their tax dollars are being spent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denish pushed the legislation during the session. Rue thanked her and Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=HCOTE\">Nate Cote<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, who carried the bill for him in the House.<\/p>\n<p>Denish signed the bill because the governor is out of state, according to the news release from the Senate minority office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, 3:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has enormous potential to increase citizen oversight and involvement,\u201d said New Mexico Foundation for Open Government Executive Director Sarah Welsh. \u201cIt\u2019s particularly exciting in a large state like New Mexico. Just imagine \u2013 citizens from\u00a0Las Cruces\u00a0to Chama will have useful government information at their fingertips, without the trouble of filing a records request and driving hundreds of miles to view documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, March 6, 8:20 a.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy signing this bill we are not just creating a Web site; we are giving the public \u2013 the people of\u00a0New Mexico \u2013 information\u00a0they should have had all along,\u201d Denish said in a news release. \u201cIn this day and age \u2013 with technology at our fingertips \u2013 there is no excuse. The time has come for complete transparency in government. When the Sunshine Portal goes live next year, the public will finally have the ability to scrutinize the state\u2019s checkbook in an easy-to-navigate, online format.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Lt.
