{"id":1417,"date":"2007-03-15T21:34:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-16T03:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/foley-says-he-has-the-votes-to-blast-out-housing-bill\/"},"modified":"2007-03-15T21:34:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-16T03:34:00","slug":"foley-says-he-has-the-votes-to-blast-out-housing-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/foley-says-he-has-the-votes-to-blast-out-housing-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Foley says he has the votes to blast out housing bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfoQfO6ElKI\/AAAAAAAABlM\/Yh-oEZNtYN8\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfoQfO6ElKI\/AAAAAAAABlM\/Yh-oEZNtYN8\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042360861558346914\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>House Minority Whip <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=190&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Foley<\/a>, R-Roswell, says House Republicans have enough votes to blast a bill that would remake the state\u2019s troubled <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/Housing%20authority%20scandal\">housing authority system<\/a> out of the Business and Industry Committee if its members don\u2019t OK the proposal when they meet at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=S&#038;type=++&#038;number=519\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 519<\/a>, sponsored by Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=277&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Kay Papen<\/a>, D-<st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, would fund an investigation to determine the extent of mismanagement that led to the housing authority system crumbling in scandal last year, and would also replace the authorities with a new system overseen by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmmfa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The committee earlier killed its mirror bill, <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=++&#038;number=997\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 997<\/a>, sponsored by Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=180&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, and has left Papen\u2019s bill in limbo, but Foley noted that a number of Democrats, including Speaker of the House <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=204&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lujan<\/a> and the committee\u2019s chair, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=221&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Debbie Rodella<\/a>, D-Ohkay Owingeh, signed on to Arnold-Jones\u2019 bill before the committee killed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfoQku6ElLI\/AAAAAAAABlU\/9EdSs3BCPfY\/s1600-h\/Foley,+Dan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfoQku6ElLI\/AAAAAAAABlU\/9EdSs3BCPfY\/s200\/Foley,+Dan.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5042360956047627442\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>It would take all Republicans and eight House Democrats to bring the bill out of committee and to the House floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJudging by the number of Democrats who signed on to House Bill 997, we believe we have ample votes to bring it to the House floor if we have to,\u201d Foley said this evening. \u201cAs a courtesy, we\u2019re giving them until tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lujan says he supports the bill but doesn\u2019t support blasting it out of committee. Most don\u2019t believe him when he insists he isn\u2019t trying to kill the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley has sponsored another bill, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/HouseBill1321.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 1321<\/a>, which would fund the investigation but not overhaul the system. Earlier this evening, Lujan allowed his bill to bypass the Judiciary Committee, to which he had assigned it, and placed it in the Appropriations and Finance Committee \u2013 its last stop before it reaches the House floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley said he prefers Papen\u2019s bill to his own, because hers provides oversight of the system, and his does not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe want to get this done so we can get back to the business of building homes and putting low-income people in homes,\u201d Foley said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Minority Whip Dan Foley, R-Roswell, says House Republicans have enough votes to blast a bill that would remake the state\u2019s troubled housing authority system out of the Business and Industry Committee if its members don\u2019t OK the proposal when they meet at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning.
