{"id":1399,"date":"2007-03-13T12:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-13T18:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/richardson-signs-statewide-smoking-ban-into-law\/"},"modified":"2007-03-13T12:10:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-13T18:10:00","slug":"richardson-signs-statewide-smoking-ban-into-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/richardson-signs-statewide-smoking-ban-into-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson signs statewide smoking ban into law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfbpKO6EkqI\/AAAAAAAABhQ\/t_zOTuKkPHI\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfbpKO6EkqI\/AAAAAAAABhQ\/t_zOTuKkPHI\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5041473194897478306\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> signed into law today a statewide ban on smoking in most public buildings.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe advantages of a law like this \u2013 dramatically reducing exposure to second-hand smoke \u2013 far outweigh any potential administrative problems,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cThe exposure to second-hand smoke, and cancer and lung and heart disease, is a risk that we should no longer take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=++&#038;number=283\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 283<\/a>, sponsored by Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=215&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Al Park<\/a>, D-Albuquerque, bans smoking in restaurants, bars and workplaces throughout the state, in addition to public transportation systems and almost all enclosed public places. It also prohibits smoking within a \u201creasonable\u201d distance of their doors and windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Smoking would still be allowed in private residences that don\u2019t provide commercial child, adult or health care; private clubs; bingo halls; retail tobacco stores; tobacco manufacturing plants; film production sets; sole proprietor businesses; and businesses with fewer than two employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Several communities, including <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, have had a similar ban in place for several years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
