The House unanimously approved the bill last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Senate approved the ban on a vote of 27-9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is a monumental step toward better health for all New Mexicans,\u201d Park said. \u201cThe dangers of secondhand smoke are undeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfFyRO6Ej8I\/AAAAAAAABbg\/exFoBhzr_lo\/s1600-h\/Park,+Al.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RfFyRO6Ej8I\/AAAAAAAABbg\/exFoBhzr_lo\/s200\/Park,+Al.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039935098389303234\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has already had an indoor smoking ban in place for several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill bans smoking in restaurants, bars and workplaces throughout the state, in addition to public transportation systems and almost all enclosed public places. It also prohibits smoking within a \u201creasonable\u201d distance of their doors and windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Smoking would still be allowed in private residences that don\u2019t provide commercial child, adult or health care; private clubs; bingo halls; retail tobacco stores; tobacco manufacturing plants; film production sets; sole proprietor businesses; and businesses with fewer than two employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Legislature has dealt a strong blow to preventable cancer, heart disease and lung disease in the state of <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>,\u201d said Nathan Bush, <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> government relations director for the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A statewide ban on smoking in most public buildings was approved by the Senate on Thursday.
