{"id":13734,"date":"2010-02-26T07:08:43","date_gmt":"2010-02-26T14:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=13734"},"modified":"2010-02-26T11:38:16","modified_gmt":"2010-02-26T18:38:16","slug":"martinez-wins-straw-poll-following-clovis-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/02\/martinez-wins-straw-poll-following-clovis-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"Martinez wins straw poll following Clovis forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11202\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11202 \" title=\"Martinez, Susana\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Martinez-Susana-300x263.jpg\" alt=\"Susana Martinez\" width=\"270\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Martinez-Susana-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Martinez-Susana.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susana Martinez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Republican gubernatorial candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/susanamartinez2010.com\/\">Susana Martinez<\/a> easily won a straw poll taken following a candidate forum Thursday evening in Clovis.<\/p>\n<p>Of 139 people who cast votes, Martinez had 42.4 percent, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allenweh2010.com\/\">Allen Weh<\/a> had 18 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/turnerforgovernor.com\/\">Doug Turner<\/a> had 15.8 percent, <a href=\"http:\/\/janiceforgovernor.com\/\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a> had 12.2 percent and <a href=\"http:\/\/domeniciforgovernor.com\/\">Pete Domenici Jr.<\/a> had 11.5 percent, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnjonline.com\/news\/eye-37323-candidates-gubernatorial.html\">Clovis News-Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Straw polls aren\u2019t scientific and the results should not be interpreted as an indicator of what Republican voters in Clovis think of the candidates. But straw polls can be a test of organizational strength and, when they follow forums as this one did, might also be a measure of what those in attendance thought.<\/p>\n<p>According to the newspaper, the candidates agreed on a lot of things during the forum, including ideas to sell the Rail Runner, reduce exempt positions and elect a Republican as the next governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019re all here,\u201d the newspaper quoted Turner as saying, \u201cbecause you don\u2019t support\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dianedenish.com\/\">Diane Denish<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weh was the only candidate to send out a news release following Thursday\u2019s forum. It stated that he received a \u201cwarm welcome, much encouragement from debate attendees in Clovis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI intend to change the way we do business in Santa Fe and get this state\u2019s economy back on track,\u201d Weh said in the release. \u201cAt the end of it, state government will be smaller, leaner and more efficient. And when I\u2019m done being your governor, I\u2019m going home \u2013 the way our Founding Fathers intended it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next forum for the Republican gubernatorial candidates will he held Saturday in Albuquerque from 6:30-9 p.m. at <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=717+University+Blvd,+Albuquerque&amp;sll=35.075979,-106.628575&amp;sspn=0.003271,0.004077&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=717+University+Blvd+SE,+Albuquerque,+Bernalillo,+New+Mexico+87106&amp;t=h&amp;z=17\">Smith-Brasher Auditorium<\/a> on the Central New Mexico Community College campus.
