{"id":1362,"date":"2007-03-07T12:42:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-07T18:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/the-gloves-are-off-domenici-attacked-by-colleagues\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T12:42:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T18:42:00","slug":"the-gloves-are-off-domenici-attacked-by-colleagues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/03\/the-gloves-are-off-domenici-attacked-by-colleagues\/","title":{"rendered":"The gloves are off: Domenici attacked by colleagues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re8H2oSz-uI\/AAAAAAAABYU\/qcRTXYR3KvY\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re8H2oSz-uI\/AAAAAAAABYU\/qcRTXYR3KvY\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039255143161527010\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>There was a sense of solemnity on Tuesday when members of the Senate Judiciary Committee discussed allegations that a colleague, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., may have violated ethical rules by pressuring a prosecutor to speed a public corruption probe.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That mood appears to be gone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/schumer.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Schumer<\/a>, D-N.Y. and the chair of Tuesday\u2019s hearing, made reference at the meeting to the fact that some of the issues would be difficult to discuss because they involved Domenici. He and the others pushed David Iglesias, the former <st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> attorney for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, to fully disclose the details of his conversation with Domenici, but they did so delicately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today, however, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dscc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee<\/a>, which is chaired by Schumer, sent out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dscc.org\/news\/roundup\/20070307_domenici\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> pointing to what could be interpreted as inconsistencies in Domenici\u2019s statements about the matter and calling into question his honesty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s getting harder and harder to keep track of Pete Domenici\u2019s denials, since he comes up with a different version every day,\u201d DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said in the release. \u201cBy tomorrow Pete Domenici won\u2019t remember having ever met David Iglesias or even knowing what the <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At issue are three statements Domenici has made regarding the allegation that he called Iglesias less than two weeks before the November 2006 election and pressured him to speed indictments in a public corruption scandal that will likely implicate high-ranking Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the time, Domenici\u2019s heir-apparent, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., was locked one of the tightest congressional contests in the nation, and was behind in the polls. Iglesias also alleges that <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> called him days before Domenici did to pressure him on the indictments. The allegations have prompted investigations of both members of Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Late last week, tracked down by an Associated Press reporter, Domenici at first said he had \u201cno idea what (Iglesias) is talking about.\u201d A couple of days later, he released a statement admitting that he made the call, asked \u201cwhat was going on in that investigation\u201d and sought \u201can idea of what timeframe we were looking at.\u201d He denied pressuring or threatening Iglesias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On Tuesday, Domenici released a third statement claiming he did not recall mentioning the November election in the call. That contradicts Iglesias\u2019 testimony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first statement could be considered a complete contradiction of the next two. Then again, Domenici had been trying to avoid the press when the news service reporter tracked him down. His full comment was, \u201cI don\u2019t have any comment. I have no idea what he\u2019s talking about.\u201d It\u2019s possible he was simply flustered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And the second and third statements aren\u2019t really contradictory, though the DSCC claims they are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cGOP Senator Pete Domenici just can\u2019t get his story straight,\u201d the DSCC release states. \u201cWhen news first broke that he called U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to pressure him about ongoing investigations, Domenici said he had no idea what Iglesias was talking about. Then when it became clear that Iglesias would testify before congressional committees, Domenici reversed course and admitted to the conversation. And now that Iglesias has testified that he felt \u2018sick\u2019 and \u2018leaned on\u2019 after Domenici\u2019s call to ask whether indictments would be brought before last November\u2019s election, Domenici says he simply cannot \u2018recall my mentioning the November election to him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut Domenici\u2019s denials have now been contradicted in sworn testimony,\u201d the release states. \u201c\u2026 Domenici is facing a Senate ethics investigation and possible obstruction of justice review \u2013 he needs to start coming clean about his exact role in this growing scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re8ITYSz-vI\/AAAAAAAABYc\/af36I7Tv7Sg\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re8ITYSz-vI\/AAAAAAAABYc\/af36I7Tv7Sg\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039255637082766066\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Such partisan attacks are common in the House, and there was much more political posturing and arguing at Tuesday\u2019s House subcommittee hearing than at the Senate committee hearing. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/news\/headlines\/wapo_second_lawmaker_20070306\/\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a> on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">home page<\/a> to \u201cLearn more about whether Rep. Heather Wilson used her own power to intimidate a federal prosecutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the newest move by the DSCC indicates that Domenici, like <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, is in for a rough time. Democratic and Republican members of both committees indicated Tuesday that they expect the investigations into the firing of eight former <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorneys to be lengthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The political fallout in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has the potential to be vast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 3:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re84EYSz-4I\/AAAAAAAABZk\/S5q9eyAC3X4\/s1600-h\/Blalack,+Lee.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Re84EYSz-4I\/AAAAAAAABZk\/S5q9eyAC3X4\/s200\/Blalack,+Lee.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5039308155942861698\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Domenici has hired an attorney who previously represented former Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Randy_%22Duke%22_Cunningham\" target=\"_blank\">Randy \u201cDuke\u201d Cunningham<\/a>, R-Calif., who is serving time in prison for bribery and other felony crimes, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/03\/07\/AR2007030701546.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.omm.com\/webcode\/navigate.asp?nodehandle=31&#038;idContent=5356\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Blalack<\/a> will defend Domenici against the allegations made by Iglesias, which could lead to sanctions or even a criminal investigation into possible obstruction of justice charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The news prompted a second release from the DSCC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHiring Duke Cunningham\u2019s attorney is just another sign that Pete Domenici is in serious trouble, with the Senate Ethics Committee already examining his conduct and a possible obstruction of justice investigation looming,\u201d Miller said in the release. \u201cNow that Domenici has hired one of the nation\u2019s top criminal defense attorneys, maybe he will finally start to give a better explanation for why he pressured a sitting <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney just days before an election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici\u2019s office has not responded to a request for comment on the initial DSCC release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4:40 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici spokesman Chris Gallegos had this to say: \u201cThe Democratic Senatorial Committee spokesman is simply incorrect asserting that Senator Domenici did anything to violate any rule of conduct. This is a blatant and cynical attempt by national Democratic operatives to try to turn a misunderstanding about a telephone call into a political smear campaign to advance their partisan ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also noted that Domenici hired Blalack last week, when Iglesias first made his allegations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a sense of solemnity on Tuesday when members of the Senate Judiciary Committee discussed allegations that a colleague, Sen.
