The case involves an alleged kickback scheme related to the construction of government buildings in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, and could implicate some high-level Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy call had been preceded by months of extensive media reports about acknowledged investigations into courthouse construction, including public comments from the FBI that it had completed its work months earlier, and a growing number of inquiries from constituents,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cI asked Mr. Iglesias if he could tell me what was going on in that investigation and give me an idea of what timeframe we were looking at. It was a very brief conversation, which concluded when I was told that the courthouse investigation would be continuing for a lengthy period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rer3GWde6AI\/AAAAAAAABUU\/XQiejMLsz3U\/s1600-h\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rer3GWde6AI\/AAAAAAAABUU\/XQiejMLsz3U\/s200\/Iglesias,+David.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5038110821647837186\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Domenici admits the call was a mistake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn retrospect, I regret making that call and I apologize,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, at no time in that conversation or any other conversation with Mr. Iglesias did I ever tell him what course of action I thought he should take on any legal matter. I have never pressured him nor threatened him in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici also said he recommended that Iglesias be replaced several months before the phone call because of a backlog of cases that was growing even as he secured more money to help alleviate the situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can read the senator\u2019s entire statement by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/DomeniciStatement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias has said he won\u2019t name the members of Congress, except under oath, because he fears retaliation. He has been subpoenaed to testify before a House subcommittee on Tuesday. The other caller is believed to be U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>, R-N.M., who has still refused to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias is one of eight <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorneys fired a month after the November election, and suspicion of political motives has prompted investigations by members of the House and Senate. The Justice Department previously said seven of the eight, including Iglesias, were fired over performance-related issues, but said Saturday for the first time that they were fired because they weren\u2019t doing enough to carry out policies of the Bush Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Complaints about a growing case backlog<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici, in his statement, said during Iglesias\u2019 six-year tenure an \u201calready heavy caseload\u201d had been \u201cswamped by unresolved new federal cases, especially in the areas of immigration and illegal drugs.\u201d He said he was \u201crepeatedly told that we needed more resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici pointed out that he has fought for more funding, and made reference to the new, $82 million federal courthouse that will be built in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said his conversations with Iglesias have been \u201calmost exclusively\u201d about such needs, but his frustration mounted as, even with the appropriation of more resources, \u201cpublic accounts indicated an inability within the office to move quickly on cases.\u201d He said in 2004 and 2005, his office expressed frustration with Iglesias to the Justice Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici said that \u201congoing dialogue and experience\u201d led him, \u201cseveral months before my call with Mr. Iglesias, to conclude and recommend to the Department of Justice that <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> needed a new <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The senator\u2019s statement comes a day after the Washington Post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/03\/02\/AR2007030201949.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that the White House approved the December firings of Iglesias and six others after the Justice Department said they \u201cwere not doing enough to carry out President Bush\u2019s policies on immigration, firearms and other issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The article, quoting \u201cadministration officials and Domenici\u2019s office,\u201d named Domenici as one who \u201cspecifically raised concerns within the Justice Department last fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It was a slight change of story for the White House and Justice Department, who had previously contended the firings were over \u201cperformance-related\u201d problems, not because of a failure to follow Bush policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The final decisions were supported by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty, the officials told the Post, but the newspaper pointed out that McNulty, who was new, said he consulted with his predecessor, James B. Comey, before approving the list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Earlier this week, Comey told the Post that Iglesias \u201cwas one of our finest and someone I had a lot of confidence in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 10:40 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Post is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/03\/04\/AR2007030400507.html\" target=\"_blank\">now reporting<\/a> that the Bush Administration is backing off its assertion that Comey was consulted with before the decisions were finalized, and say they were mistaken in telling the Post that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Post also reports that even Domenici\u2019s version of the phone call could constitute a violation of Congressional ethics rules.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
