Susana Martinez&#8217;s fundraising and political consultant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/02\/meet-gov-martinezs-top-adviser\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jay McCleskey<\/a> has ended without any charges being filed, McCleskey&#8217;s attorney said Friday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_98693\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98693\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/McCleskey-Jay-336x223.jpg\" alt=\"Jay McCleskey\" width=\"336\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/McCleskey-Jay-336x223.jpg 336w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/McCleskey-Jay-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/McCleskey-Jay.jpg 771w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Enrique Knell<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">McCleskey with Gov. Susana Martinez on election night in 2010.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Albuquerque Journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/735011\/news\/nm-news\/mccleskey-lawyer-grand-jury-over-no-charges.html\" target=\"_blank\">quoted Paul Kennedy<\/a>, the lawyer, as saying, \u201cWe have been informed that the investigation has been terminated and no charges will be forthcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Justice doesn&#8217;t generally\u00a0confirm the existence of such investigations. The DOJ was quoted by the Journal as saying, in this instance, &#8220;As a matter of policy, Justice Department agencies, including the U.S. Attorney and FBI, may not comment on investigative matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Martinez reiterated on Friday what she&#8217;s said <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/martinez-says-shes-confident-mccleskey-has-done-nothing-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the past<\/a> &#8212; that she believed\u00a0McCleskey would be cleared of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As I said, I was fully confident that Jay didn&#8217;t do anything wrong and that I trusted the system to look into baseless complaints and reject them,&#8221; Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m disappointed that some political opponents felt the need to leak misleading information about this in an effort to smear Jay, but I&#8217;m glad for him and his family that it&#8217;s over,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Santa Fe New Mexican broke the news <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/fbi-still-asking-questions-about-mccleskey-newspaper-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\">in early November<\/a> that the FBI had been interviewing\u00a0some New Mexico Republicans about\u00a0McCleskey.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Specific allegations weren&#8217;t\u00a0included. A\u00a0source quoted in The New Mexican\u2019s article was identified as\u00a0a \u201cprominent New Mexico Republican\u201d who wasn\u2019t named but \u201cconfirmed being interviewed in recent months by federal agents about funds from Martinez\u2019s campaign, as well as money from her 2011 inauguration committee, going to the governor\u2019s political consultant, Jay McCleskey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Days later <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/grand-jury-is-investigating-2010-martinez-inauguration-paper-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Journal quoted<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;a former Martinez supporter interviewed by the FBI&#8221; as saying people involved in the inauguration\u00a0\u201chave complained that more than $100,000 in checks were issued without invoices showing what the money was spent on and that substantial amounts were paid to businesses controlled by McCleskey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That included &#8220;$40,000 for a video of the inauguration that may not have been produced,&#8221; the Journal quoted the source as saying.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the wide-ranging investigation the feds also subpoenaed records from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/11\/feds-subpoena-tax-and-rev-audit-records-newspaper-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\">state&#8217;s Taxation and Revenue Department<\/a>\u00a0and from the Third Judicial District Attorney&#8217;s Office in Las Cruces <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2015\/12\/feds-subpoena-records-from-martinezs-tenure-as-da\/\" target=\"_blank\">related to Martinez&#8217;s tenure as DA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans who are at odds with McCleskey have been talking with federal law enforcement officials about McCleskey&#8217;s\u00a0dealings for years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;As I said, I was fully confident that Jay didn&#8217;t do anything wrong and that I trusted the system to look into baseless complaints and reject them,&#8221; Gov.
