{"id":1328,"date":"2007-02-28T15:51:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-28T21:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/vigil-defense-lawyer-could-be-the-next-u-s-attorney\/"},"modified":"2007-02-28T15:51:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-28T21:51:00","slug":"vigil-defense-lawyer-could-be-the-next-u-s-attorney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/vigil-defense-lawyer-could-be-the-next-u-s-attorney\/","title":{"rendered":"Vigil defense lawyer could be the next U.S. attorney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of former state Treasurer Robert Vigil\u2019s defense attorneys is under consideration and may be the frontrunner to replace David Iglesias as the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> attorney for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fresh off helping win Vigil\u2019s acquittal on 23 of 24 felony counts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowlesandcrow.com\/DynamicAttorneys.shtml?wldpid=3611999_1&#038;mailpagename=ObfuscatedForm&amp;p=yes\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Bowles<\/a> is under consideration for the top federal law enforcement job in the state, a source close to the process confirmed for me. He said Bowles is the frontrunner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Reached by telephone, Bowles wouldn\u2019t confirm that he is being considered or is the frontrunner, but he didn\u2019t deny it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI can\u2019t comment on any of this,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The news comes on <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/outgoing-us-attorney-iglesias-says-he.html\">Iglesias\u2019 last day<\/a> as <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> attorney. It also comes as Vigil\u2019s attorneys are <a href=\"http:\/\/freenewmexican.com\/news\/57696.html\" target=\"_blank\">appealing his conviction<\/a> on one count of attempted bribery to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Denver<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>, as well as a federal judge\u2019s refusal to let him remain free while he\u2019s appealing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Working under attorney Sam Bregman, a Democrat, the Republican Bowles helped secure Vigil\u2019s acquittal last year on all but one count in the massive public corruption case. Vigil\u2019s conviction on the remaining count of attempted bribery has landed him a 37-month prison sentence, and he has been ordered to turn himself in within 60 days of Jan. 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Iglesias says he was forced out for political reasons, not because of poor job performance, but many have speculated that his failure to secure guilty verdicts on more counts in the Vigil case was a factor in his ouster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bowles, on the other hand, gained stature for helping secure not-guilty verdicts on almost all charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Still, it would be hard to ignore the irony of the situation: A lawyer who helped unravel one of the largest public corruption cases in state history could become the state\u2019s next <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bowles was an assistant <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney from 1996-2001 before moving into private practice and taking on a caseload that includes a lot of criminal defense work. According to his Web site, he has tried more than 40 cases in front of juries and has handled more than 25 appeals to the 10th Circuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">News of Iglesias\u2019 departure first broke when the Bush Administration asked Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, R-N.M., to recommend candidates to replace him. The senator suggested Jim Bibb of <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:city>, who ran unsuccessfully against Gary King for attorney general last year; T. Glenn Ellington of <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa  Fe<\/st1:city>; Charles Peifer of <st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city>; and Pat Rogers of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Rogers<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he wasn\u2019t interested the job. Following several weeks of consideration of the other three, the administration began looking elsewhere, the source told me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ve been unable to reach officials in Domenici\u2019s office or elsewhere for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sources say an announcement on the new <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney could come any day from the Bush Administration, but may be delayed by the controversy surrounding Iglesias\u2019 departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Bregman said he couldn\u2019t comment beyond releasing this statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJason Bowles is one of the brightest attorneys in <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>, and whatever he would do or has chosen to do would be an outstanding choice for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 4:35 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A spokesman for U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., said the congressman won\u2019t comment on appointments that haven\u2019t yet been made, but said it is important that the next <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> attorney be able to effectively confront a number of challenges, including border security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of former state Treasurer Robert Vigil\u2019s defense attorneys is under consideration and may be the frontrunner to replace David Iglesias as the U.S. attorney for New Mexico.
