Gov. Susana Martinez, shown here in 2010.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMarco Rubio is a compelling leader who can unite the country around conservative principles that will improve the lives of all Americans,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/03\/susana-martinez-endorses-marco-rubio-220166\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a> quoted New Mexico&#8217;s governor as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stakes for our great country are too high \u2014 and the differences between the candidates too great \u2014 for me to remain neutral in this race,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I wholeheartedly trust Marco to keep us safe and ensure a better tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez will campaign with Rubio on Friday in Kansas and Saturday in Florida &#8212; his home state and a must-win for a candidate who is trailing Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas&#8217; GOP caucus is Saturday. Florida&#8217;s primary is March 15.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez, who chairs the Republican Governor&#8217;s Association, had previously <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/03\/martinez-stays-out-of-presidential-primary-as-trump-heads-for-super-tuesday-romp\/\" target=\"_blank\">stayed out of the presidential race<\/a>. She had also declined to say whether she would back Trump, the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, if he became the nominee.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez&#8217;s decision to back Rubio comes after Trump won a number of states <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2016-election\/clinton-sanders-trump-score-early-wins-super-tuesday-n529496\" target=\"_blank\">on Super Tuesday<\/a>, making it more likely he will become the party&#8217;s nominee. And her endorsement\u00a0comes about a week after N.J. Gov. Chris Christie &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/latino.foxnews.com\/latino\/politics\/2014\/05\/28\/chris-christie-to-stump-for-gov-susana-martinez-rekindling-buzz-about-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">long a Martinez ally<\/a> &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/02\/26\/4-reasons-why-chris-christie-endorsed-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">backed Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As chair of the RGA, Martinez led a call of GOP governors days ago to discuss the presidential race. Christie&#8217;s backing of Trump was <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/03\/martinez-stays-out-of-presidential-primary-as-trump-heads-for-super-tuesday-romp\/\" target=\"_blank\">a hot topic<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As news of Martinez&#8217;s endorsement of Rubio broke early Thursday, some New Mexico Republicans were pleased. State Rep. Monica Youngblood, R-Albuquerque, who chairs Rubio&#8217;s campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/albuquerque\/blog\/morning-edition\/2015\/12\/abq-state-representative-picked-to-chair-rubios.html\" target=\"_blank\">in New Mexico<\/a>, tweeted that she was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MonYoungblood\/status\/705383603308376064\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;excited.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0Darren White, the former Bernalillo County sheriff, tweeted that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/darrenPwhite\/status\/705374288308666375\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;very proud&#8221;<\/a> of Martinez and agreed that the stakes were too high to stay on the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez has often\u00a0been mentioned by many Republicans, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latintimes.com\/marco-rubio-hints-susana-martinez-possible-vice-president-353179\" target=\"_blank\">including Rubio<\/a>, as someone who would make a good vice presidential candidate. The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/01\/susana-martinez-vice-president-endorsement-2016-218423\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed her<\/a> to be the party&#8217;s vice presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez\u00a0has <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/ballot-box\/gop-presidential-primary\/192335-susana-martinez-not-interested-in-vp-job\" target=\"_blank\">insisted<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/post\/susana-martinez-i-will-not-be-vice-president\/2012\/04\/09\/gIQAJwwg6S_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\">repeatedly<\/a> that she&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koat.com\/news\/new-mexico\/albuquerque\/Gov-Martinez-Continues-to-Refuse-VP-Job\/10357902\" target=\"_blank\">not<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/watchdog.org\/151828\/nm-exclusive-interview-with-gov-susana-martinez-absolutely-not-interested-in-vp-nomination-time-to-vote-on-repealing-drivers-licenses-for-illegal-immigrants\/\" target=\"_blank\">interested<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of New Mexico\u2019s June 7 primary, Republican primary voters were split in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/727550\/news\/gop-race-a-3way-contest-in-nm.html\" target=\"_blank\">a recent poll<\/a>\u00a0of the presidential primary. The survey, conducted by Research &amp; Polling Inc. for the Albuquerque Journal, found Cruz at 25 percent, Trump at 24 percent, and Rubio at 19 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/731577\/news\/but-sanders-support-strong-among-young-people-and-men.html\" target=\"_blank\">a separate survey<\/a> of likely Democratic primary voters in New Mexico conducted by Research &amp; Polling for the Journal had Hillary Clinton at 47\u00a0percent and Bernie Sanders at 33\u00a0percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>N.M.
