{"id":1318,"date":"2007-02-27T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-27T17:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/minimum-wage-increase-bill-amended-again\/"},"modified":"2007-02-27T11:15:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-27T17:15:00","slug":"minimum-wage-increase-bill-amended-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/minimum-wage-increase-bill-amended-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum wage increase bill amended again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnsIdWFmI\/AAAAAAAABMs\/2TQJNoPRa0c\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnsIdWFmI\/AAAAAAAABMs\/2TQJNoPRa0c\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036264291189528162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A proposal to increase the state\u2019s minimum wage underwent another significant change in a House committee Monday as lawmakers struggle to find compromise.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=S&#038;type=++&amp;number=324&#038;Submit=Search&amp;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 324<\/a>, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=250\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Altamirano<\/a>, D-Silver City, was approved by the House Business and Industry Committee on a vote of 7-6, but it more closely mirrors a House proposal than the one approved by the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill is on the House temporary calendar, so there\u2019s a chance it could be voted on today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnjIdWFkI\/AAAAAAAABMc\/qNUhLXf9MNs\/s1600-h\/Lujan,+Ben.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnjIdWFkI\/AAAAAAAABMc\/qNUhLXf9MNs\/s200\/Lujan,+Ben.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036264136570705474\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Two weeks ago, the House Labor and Human Resources Committee amended Altamirano\u2019s bill to mirror <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=H&#038;type=++&amp;number=759&#038;Submit=Search&amp;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 759<\/a>, sponsored by Speaker of the House <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=204\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lujan<\/a>, D-Namb\u00e9. The bills differ on key points, and a failure to find compromise torpedoed the wage increase proposal in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There have been a lot of confusing changes, so here\u2019s where things stand:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The current version of Altamirano\u2019s bill, as approved by the House committee on Monday, raises the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour this year and $7.50 per hour next year. It includes indexing that would increase the minimum wage in the future to keep up with inflation and does not prohibit local governments from passing their own, higher wage increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnsIdWFlI\/AAAAAAAABMk\/OwAFPMd9KEY\/s1600-h\/Altamirano,+Ben.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReRnsIdWFlI\/AAAAAAAABMk\/OwAFPMd9KEY\/s200\/Altamirano,+Ben.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036264291189528146\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Thanks to an amendment by the committee, it also exempts agricultural workers and provides other exemptions, including some employees of charities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The version that has been approved by the Senate would raise the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour in 2008 and $7.50 per hour in 2009. It does not include indexing that would increase the minimum wage in the future to keep up with inflation, exempts agricultural workers and keeps cities and counties from passing their own wage increases, with the exception of those that have already done it \u2013 Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Lujan\u2019s bill would raise the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour this year and $7.50 per hour next year. It includes indexing that would increase the minimum wage in the future to keep up with inflation and does not prohibit local governments from passing their own, higher wage increases. It does not exempt any workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">So, essentially, the new version of the bill moving through the House includes most of the provisions of Lujan\u2019s bill but one, key provision of Altamirano\u2019s bill \u2013 the exemptions for agricultural and other workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A proposal to increase the state\u2019s minimum wage underwent another significant change in a House committee Monday as lawmakers struggle to find compromise.
