Phil Griego is facing criminal charges related to a real estate deal he worked on\u00a0as a legislator while also\u00a0being paid by\u00a0the company buying the historic building from the state.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_131799\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131799\" src=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Griego-Phil-336x248.jpg\" alt=\"Phil Griego\" width=\"336\" height=\"248\" \/><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Courtesy photo<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phil Griego<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Griego, D-San Jose, was allegedly paid\u00a0more than $50,000 for assisting the company, Galisteo Street, Inc. (GSI), in obtaining the property in Santa Fe. Griego didn&#8217;t disclose\u00a0that financial relationship during the 2014 legislative process that led to state approval of the sale.<\/p>\n<p>Griego faces nine counts including bribery, fraud, perjury, tampering with public records and violating the ethical principles of public service. The Office of Attorney General Hector Balderas made the allegations in <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/GriegoComplaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a criminal complaint<\/a> filed Monday\u00a0in Santa Fe.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/OAG-authorized-statement.Griego.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">statement from the AG&#8217;s spokesman<\/a>\u00a0says Griego\u00a0&#8220;used his role as a legislator to receive personal compensation, which he then failed to disclose in filings required of legislators.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Griego was quoted by <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/34264\/breaking-former-senator-charged-with-nine-counts-defends-self-in-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Political Report<\/a> as saying he would fight the charges, &#8220;because everything they have in there is wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Griego <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/555514\/politics\/breaking-sen-phil-griego-resigns-from-nm-senate.html\" target=\"_blank\">resigned last March<\/a>\u00a0during a legislative inquiry into the real estate deal.\u00a0That came after The Santa Fe Reporter published an article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfreporter.com\/santafe\/article-8963-sold-out.html\" target=\"_blank\">in July 2014<\/a>\u00a0examining\u00a0his\u00a0involvement in\u00a0the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Griego agreed to monitor the sale of the building\u00a0for GSI\u00a0in September 2013, the complaint states. Meanwhile, in his legislative capacity, Griego pushed approval of\u00a0the sale.\u00a0For example, Griego\u00a0presented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legislation.aspx?Chamber=H&amp;LegType=JR&amp;LegNo=8&amp;year=14\" target=\"_blank\">the resolution<\/a> authorizing the sale of the property to the Senate Rules Committee on Feb.\u00a018, 2014.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Griego then stood silent the next day as inaccurate and incomplete information regarding the lease and sale were discussed on the Senate floor,&#8221; the complaint states. &#8220;Griego continued influencing the legislative process through final review by the Capitol Buildings Planning Commission, the final step in permitting the sale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to failing to disclose\u00a0the fact that he was being paid by GSI to\u00a0the state, fellow lawmakers, and the public, Griego hid it\u00a0from broker John J.
