The bill will likely be approved there, and will then head to the House floor for a vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The committee\u2019s vote was to send the bill on without a recommendation. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=237&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Don Tripp<\/a>, R-Socorro, cast the dissenting vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReL1lYdWFWI\/AAAAAAAABJ0\/bfer29Gr-0s\/s1600-h\/Garcia,+Mary+Jane.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/ReL1lYdWFWI\/AAAAAAAABJ0\/bfer29Gr-0s\/s200\/Garcia,+Mary+Jane.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035857355923133794\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Cockfighting supporters made emotional pleas to lawmakers at the hearing, and one man had to be removed by police. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/xgr\/541304xgr02-25-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>, those who oppose the bill made the claim once again that cockfighting is part of Hispanic heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Garcia rejected that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI know about being Hispanic in a rural community,\u201d the news service quoted her as saying. \u201cCockfighting has never been part of my culture and my community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The cockfighting ban passed the Senate earlier this month on a vote of 31-11.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The proposal to ban cockfighting in New Mexico was approved on a vote of 6-1 on Saturday by members of the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee.
