It\u2019s no question that we need him back at the Land Office.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe stakes are high. With Ray, he\u2019ll bring much needed stability back to the land office,\u201d Steinborn said. \u201cHe\u2019s ethical, principled and knows how to work with communities to maximize the dollars returned to the land office and ultimately our schools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen Ray Powell served as land commissioner, he was recognized for running one of the best land management agencies in the country,\u201d Cote said. \u201cRight now, the land office is in crisis, and we are desperately in need of leadership we can trust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Powell, a veterinarian who served as land commissioner <\/span>from 1993-2002,<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is currently employed as a regional director for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rootsandshoots.org\/\">Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research Education and Conservation<\/a>. He said the lawmakers who endorsed him &#8220;have been instrumental in exposing the behind-the-scene deals happening at the Land Office.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m eager to clean the place up.  I look forward to working with these outstanding leaders to ensure real reform is enacted to protect our public lands and the significant revenues they generate for our public schools, universities and hospitals.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Powell faces <\/span>Santa Fe County Commissioners <a id=\"f5kh\" title=\"Harry Montoya\" href=\"http:\/\/www.santafecounty.org\/county_commissioners\/harry_montoya\">Harry Montoya<\/a> and <a id=\"xw_:\" title=\"Mike Anaya\" href=\"http:\/\/mikeanaya.org\/Michael-Anaya-bio.html\">Mike Anaya<\/a> and PRC Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmprc.state.nm.us\/commissioner5.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sandy Jones<\/a> in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Four Republicans are also running for the office &#8211; oilman <a href=\"http:\/\/spiro4land.com\/\">Spiro Vassilopoulos<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.votejamesjackson.com\/\">Jim Jackson<\/a>, who took a leave of absence from the land office to campaign for the post; cattle rancher <a id=\"x.zh\" title=\"Matt Rush\" href=\"http:\/\/mdrush.com\/index.html\">Matt Rush<\/a>; and GOP activist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imbackingbob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Cornelius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Peter St. Cyr is a contributing writer to this site, and Chief Political Reporter at 770KKOB AM.
