{"id":13037,"date":"2010-02-15T00:00:31","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T07:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=13037"},"modified":"2010-02-15T00:09:14","modified_gmt":"2010-02-15T07:09:14","slug":"senators-to-hold-hearing-on-wilderness-bill-today-in-las-cruces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/02\/senators-to-hold-hearing-on-wilderness-bill-today-in-las-cruces\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators to hold hearing on wilderness bill today in Cruces"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13038\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13038\" title=\"Organ Mountains\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Organ-Mountains.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Organ Mountains (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>U.S. Sens. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.senate.gov\/\">Tom Udall<\/a>, D-N.M., will be in Las Cruces today to hold an official Senate hearing on their proposal to protect more than 300,000 acres of land in Do\u00f1a Ana County.<\/p>\n<p>The Energy and Natural Resources Committee field hearing on the <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d111:s.01689:\">Organ Mountains \u2013 Desert Peaks Wilderness Act<\/a> will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the <a href=\"http:\/\/map.nmsu.edu\/index.php?build=CC\">Corbett Center<\/a> ballrooms on the New Mexico State University campus.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing, according to a news release from Bingaman, is an official action of the Senate during which only invited witnesses will deliver testimony. The hearing is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The senators introduced the legislation\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2009\/10\/2009\/10\/2009\/09\/senators-introduce-dona-ana-county-wilderness-bill\/\">in October<\/a>. The bill would designate 259,000 acres as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilderness#United_States\">wilderness<\/a> and 100,000 acres as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Conservation_Area\">national conservation areas<\/a>. In addition to the Organ Mountains, land on and around the Robledo, Do\u00f1a Ana and Potrillo mountains would be protected.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would also release 16,350 acres currently designated as a wilderness study area along the county\u2019s border with Mexico. That\u2019s intended to address concerns that law enforcement patrols are hampered by rules against motorized vehicles entering the protected area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sens.
