Tom Vilsack drops out of 2008 presidential race; move could benefit Richardson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rd8kzYdWFOI\/AAAAAAAABIU\/hpyEn2RjAWc\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rd8kzYdWFOI\/AAAAAAAABIU\/hpyEn2RjAWc\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034783373580965090\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Former Iowa Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomvilsack08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Vilsack<\/a> has abandoned his bid for the presidency, which could give a boost to the campaign of New Mexico Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move leaves <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> as the only Democratic candidate for president who has experience as a governor, and voters historically like sending governors to the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Vilsack, 56, worked hard but failed to attract the attention and cash to compete with the top candidates in the race \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt is money and only money that is the reason we are leaving today,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070223\/ap_on_el_pr\/vilsack2008;_ylt=AjfCDNfq7CISsAV8mDyEV1es0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> quoted Vilsack as saying at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rd8ku4dWFNI\/AAAAAAAABIM\/R0UY1V3Ttb4\/s1600-h\/Vilsack,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/Rd8ku4dWFNI\/AAAAAAAABIM\/R0UY1V3Ttb4\/s200\/Vilsack,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034783296271553746\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Vilsack\u2019s withdrawal leaves eight candidates in the race for the Democratic nomination. With <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> holding the first caucuses in the nation in January, his endorsement will be sought by all the candidates, and he could be considered as a vice-presidential nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He was the first to enter the race in November, and he\u2019s the first to drop out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The move is important for <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> because, historically, governors fare better in presidential elections than do members of Congress, and many analysts expected Vilsack or Richardson to gain traction because of that. During Wednesday\u2019s forum, former Alaska Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravel2008.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gravel<\/a>, another Democratic candidate, said if he didn\u2019t secure the nomination he favored Vilsack or Richardson, in that order, because of their experience as governors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">During Wednesday\u2019s forum, Vilsack gave no hint that he might withdraw from the race. He spoke passionately about ending the war in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region> and redirecting resources to deal with problems at home and in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Afghanistan<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 11:40 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign released this statement on Vilsack\u2019s withdrawal from the race:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile I respect and understand Tom\u2019s decision, he will be missed from the campaign. He is a good friend, and a man of integrity and tremendous ability,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cAs governor, Tom accomplished a great deal for the people of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.
