They met with the commander of forces in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, General David Petraeus, in addition to several other American and Iraqi leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce shot video, which you can view by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pearce.house.gov\/UploadedFiles\/PearceIraq-Broadband.wmv\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTo gain a real understanding of the situation in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, there is no substitute for talking directly to our commanders and troops on the ground,\u201d Pearce said in an e-mail newsletter to supporters. \u201cI was particularly impressed with our commander in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, General David Petraeus. Having co-authored the Army\u2019s field manual on fighting counterinsurgency, General Patraeus literally wrote the book on how to win the kind of fight we\u2019re in. His thorough responses to our tough questions in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Baghdad<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> indicated that our military commanders and the Iraqi leadership believe the new strategy can succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said he is also confident that the troop surge and President Bush\u2019s demand that Iraqis begin taking more responsibility for their government are positive steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe fate of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> is ultimately in the hands of Iraqis; particularly Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his government,\u201d Pearce said. \u201c\u2026 General Petraeus states that the American reinforcements that are on the way to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> appear to have stiffened the prime minister\u2019s resolve while strengthening his hand. The Iraqi government is functioning, having passed a budget as well as the most innovative investment laws in the <st1:place st=\"on\">Middle East<\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYet, we must see concrete results in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Baghdad<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> in the form of dramatically improved security. As <st1:city st=\"on\">Baghdad<\/st1:city> goes, so goes the fate of freedom in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region>, the prospects for peace and stability in the <st1:place st=\"on\">Middle East<\/st1:place>, and the strength of our own national security,\u201d he said. \u201cWithin days, 40 percent of the planned doubling of American security forces in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Baghdad<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> will be on the ground working alongside 100,000 Iraqi troops. Now is the time for the Iraqi people to step up and seize their future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce said the stakes are high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> faces a seminal test of wills,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m encouraged to report that our commanders and troops in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> continue to believe in the mission and their ability to achieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
