He will serve for at least 12 months while the board searches for a new superintendent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to having the votes of all five school board members, Rounds also had the endorsement of incoming board members Connie Phillips and Bonnie Votaw, who will be sworn in next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis decision was based on many factors, ranging from the recommendations made by a citizen-based interview committee to his many years of educational experience,\u201d Board President Sharon Wooden said. \u201cWe conducted thorough reference checks and found that Mr. Rounds was very much an open book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rounds said he is excited to get to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s been one of my career dreams,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I was superintendent in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Alamogordo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, I looked across the mountains with tremendous interest. This is certainly the apex to my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rounds, a native New Mexican, said he is eager to begin work on many issues facing the district, and acknowledged that he doesn\u2019t have all the answers. He pledged to be the \u201crudder\u201d that guides the district through tough waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The district fired late last year former Superintendent Sonia Diaz. She was the third leader to leave amid scandal in the last six years, and the district has suffered during that time of turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOne thing I plan to be is a good listener,\u201d Rounds said. \u201cThere are many challenges we\u2019ll have to face but if you listen well, you can develop a plan to work through those issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rounds retired from the Hobbs Municipal Schools in January 2005 after serving as superintendent for a decade. He was superintendent of the Alamogordo Public Schools from 1991-1995.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rounds has a master\u2019s in educational administration from the <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:placename> and a bachelor\u2019s in education from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously appointed Stan Rounds of Hobbs to be the district\u2019s interim superintendent.
