He was taken to the jail he runs, but released after posting $1,000 bail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have authorized an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding the matter from the time of Mr. Barela\u2019s arrest to the time of his release on bail from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Detention<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>,\u201d Haines said in a news release. \u201cI have placed Mr. Barela on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, the results of which will assist me in proceeding properly in the interests of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the meantime, Major Cheryl Roach will run the jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMr. Barela is innocent until proven otherwise, and this is a personnel matter about which the county will have no further comment at this time,\u201d Haines said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Barela called police to his home in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Saturday evening. Police say they were responding to a call about another man who lives in the home, was suicidal and had a knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">They say Barela assaulted officers after one of them drew a taser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The suicidal man, who the county says is Barela\u2019s cousin, was also arrested.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do\u00f1a Ana County Manager Brian Haines has placed jail Administrator Chris Barela on paid administrative leave during an internal investigation of the events surrounding his arrest on Saturday.
