{"id":1268,"date":"2007-02-15T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-15T21:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/richardson-pushed-to-back-parental-notification-bill\/"},"modified":"2007-02-15T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-15T21:30:00","slug":"richardson-pushed-to-back-parental-notification-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/richardson-pushed-to-back-parental-notification-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson pushed to back parental notification bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RdTRPzSe5kI\/AAAAAAAAA9s\/QJoBIW0P4N8\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RdTRPzSe5kI\/AAAAAAAAA9s\/QJoBIW0P4N8\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031876753075660354\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In the Year of the Presidential Campaign, pro-life groups may be trying a new tactic in an attempt to get a parental notification law in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A hearing on <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=S&#038;type=++&#038;number=442&#038;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 442<\/a>, sponsored by Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=257&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Cravens<\/a>, R-Albuquerque, had been scheduled in front of the Senate Public Affairs Committee this afternoon, but was delayed until Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Allen Sanchez, executive director of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the hearing was delayed \u201cto get an opinion from the governor on what he thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bill has passed the House and died in the Senate in the past, and Gov. Bill Richardson has declined to take a stance on the proposal. The bill would require notification of parents or legal guardians at least 48 hours before an abortion can be performed on a teen under the age of 16, unless her life is at stake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Could this be a new tactic? <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s stance on parental notification before an abortion is performed is certain to be an issue with social conservatives, including many Hispanics, during his presidential run. Maybe he\u2019ll be inclined to weigh in this year because of that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s office gave no clues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe governor\u2019s just focused on his own agenda,\u201d said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Gilbert Gallegos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I asked if that meant he wouldn\u2019t weigh in before Sunday, though he\u2019ll be asked to do so.
