{"id":1255,"date":"2007-02-13T12:20:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-13T18:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/competing-minimum-wage-bills-to-be-debated\/"},"modified":"2007-02-13T12:20:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-13T18:20:00","slug":"competing-minimum-wage-bills-to-be-debated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/competing-minimum-wage-bills-to-be-debated\/","title":{"rendered":"Competing minimum wage bills to be debated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RdIB0zSe5QI\/AAAAAAAAA58\/iukfdpZCtaQ\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RdIB0zSe5QI\/AAAAAAAAA58\/iukfdpZCtaQ\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031085740358821122\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Competing minimum wage bills sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=250\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Altamirano<\/a> and Speaker of the House <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=204\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lujan<\/a> will both be heard in a House committee today.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=S&#038;type=++&amp;number=324&#038;Submit=Search&amp;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 324<\/a> has already passed the Senate, but infighting between Democrats over particulars of how to raise the minimum wage led to Lujan introducing <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?chamber=H&#038;type=++&amp;number=759&#038;Submit=Search&amp;year=07\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 759<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both will be heard today in the House <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/committeedetail.asp?CommCode=HLC\" target=\"_blank\">Labor and Human Resources Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both bills raise the state minimum wage to $7.50 per hour in two phases. Altamirano\u2019s bill would raise the minimum wage to $6.50 per hour in 2008 and $7.50 per hour in 2009. Lujan\u2019s implements each phase a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Altamirano\u2019s bill does not include indexing that would increase the minimum wage in the future to keep up with inflation, exempts agricultural workers and keeps cities and counties from passing their own wage increases, with the exception of those that have already done it \u2013 <st1:city st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:City> and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lujan\u2019s bill, on the other hand, does include inflation indexing, doesn\u2019t exempt agricultural workers and doesn\u2019t keep cities and counties from increasing the minimum wage beyond the level set by the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Altamirano\u2019s bill is backed by the governor, but the differences between the two bills are the same arguments that torpedoed <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s proposal to raise the state minimum wage last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-style: italic;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">A prior version of this posting listed incorrect dates for the implementation of a wage increase proposed in each bill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Competing minimum wage bills sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Ben Altamirano and Speaker of the House Ben Lujan will both be heard in a House committee today.
