Bill Richardson announced a $15,000 grant to help keep the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgclublc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces<\/a> afloat during a visit to the city Monday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Boys and Girls Club announced last week that it may have to close its doors if it can\u2019t find additional funding. Telephones were shut off, and the club\u2019s board president said the center doesn\u2019t have any major donors left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s grant will keep the club open through the summer and give it time to find additional funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI know the great work of the Boys and Girls Club,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said in announcing the grant. \u201cI believe the Boys and Girls Club deserves a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The funds come from a federal fiscal relief fund that can be drawn from at the governor\u2019s discretion. The grant will go to the City of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, which will administer it to ensure accountability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s just the start of getting out of the hole for the club, which has a $90,000 debt beyond what <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> granted. The governor called on the business community to help out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While in <st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename>, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richards<\/st1:city><st1:city st=\"on\">on<\/st1:city> visited a pre-kindergarten program in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">La Mesa<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> to meet with students and parents. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> continues to push for increased funding for such programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s my hope that someday we no longer have to turn children away, and that every pre-K program has enough funding and enough space to meet the needs of all New Mexican four-year olds,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cThat is why this year my legislative package includes expanding our pre-kindergarten program from 2,200 kids to 5,000 kids statewide, as well as providing funds for course materials, transportation and technical assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Following the two public events, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> had a fundraiser for his presidential campaign at the home of a local farmer in the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Below is video of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s announcement related to the Boys and Girls Club and some photos of him signing autographs at the event.
