{"id":12374,"date":"2010-02-01T13:35:01","date_gmt":"2010-02-01T20:35:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=12374"},"modified":"2010-02-02T12:48:03","modified_gmt":"2010-02-02T19:48:03","slug":"senate-might-expand-webcasting-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/02\/senate-might-expand-webcasting-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate might expand webcasting too"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10091\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10091\" title=\"Webcam\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Webcam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Kevin Steinhardt\/flickr.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Days after the House dramatically <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/01\/house-deserves-praise-for-increasing-transparency\/\">expanded webcasting<\/a> of its proceedings, the Senate may be poised to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SSANC\">Michael Sanchez<\/a>, D-Belen, has introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/_session.aspx?chamber=S&amp;legtype=R&amp;legno=%20%20%201&amp;year=10\">Senate Resolution 1<\/a>, which would expand video webcasting from the Senate floor to include multiple cameras instead of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/webcast\/senate_video.aspx\">the one<\/a> that\u2019s currently used.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution would eliminate the part of the current webcasting rule that requires video webcasting \u201cfrom a single camera installed at the rear of the chamber\u201d and replace it with words that state that the video stream shall be \u201cproduced from cameras configured and operated in such a way that as much of the chamber is displayed as practicable but that no material on members\u2019 desks, computer monitors or similar devices can be read or viewed except as would otherwise be possible with an unaided eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resolution is awaiting a hearing in the Senate Rules Committee. If it\u2019s approved there, the proposed rule change would also need the backing of the majority of senators in a floor vote. To bypass the committee if it doesn&#8217;t approve the rule change, the resolution would need approval of two-thirds of senators in a floor vote.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SGRIR\">Eric Griego<\/a>, D-Albuquerque, plans to introduce a resolution today that would require the Senate to begin audio webcasting from committee meetings this session and begin video webcasting of Senate committee meetings next year.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution isn\u2019t yet available online, but Griego said it\u2019s modeled after similar legislation the House approved on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransparency and accountability should be cornerstones of our democracy. Many key decisions are made in committee. The public should not be left in the dark because they can\u2019t make the trek to Santa Fe,\u201d Griego said.<\/p>\n<p>The House, after changes approved Friday, should have full audio and video webcasting of floor sessions and committee meetings beginning next year.
