{"id":1211,"date":"2007-02-06T12:32:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-06T18:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/school-board-elections-are-running-smoothly\/"},"modified":"2007-02-06T12:32:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-06T18:32:00","slug":"school-board-elections-are-running-smoothly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/school-board-elections-are-running-smoothly\/","title":{"rendered":"School board elections are running smoothly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The three school board elections in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> appear to be running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Elections staffers, poll workers and candidates I\u2019ve been able to reach have reported few problems and, at least in the <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Gadsden<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> Independent School District, an unusually high voter turnout for a school board election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That isn\u2019t surprising: The south-county community has been very active in its school district since recalling four of five board members a few years ago after they fired popular Superintendent Ron Haugen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state appointed new board members, who reinstated Haugen. Those new board members are up for re-election today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sunland<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Park<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, more than 50 people had voted before 11 a.m. \u2013 not a huge percentage of the 3,367 registered voters who are assigned to that polling place, but a far higher number than in past years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In that race, District 1 Board Member Manuela Huerta is challenged by Luz Vargas-Troncoso, the recalled former board member Huerta replaced. Huerta is the sister of Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Dolores Salda\u00f1a Caviness, a close ally of Sunland Park Mayor Jesus \u201cRuben\u201d Segura, who is Vargas\u2019 political enemy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That means <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Gadsden<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s District 1 race has exposed deep divisions in that community and, though there haven\u2019t been any problems inside the polling place, there were some words exchanged outside it this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ll be heading out to polling places in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> this afternoon to report on turnout. District 5 incumbent Sharon Wooden and Connie Phillips, one of Wooden\u2019s two challengers, said they\u2019ve not heard of any problems today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">District 4 candidate Larry Garcia said the same, but cautioned that he has been in meetings this morning and not paying much attention to the election.
