Sewell\u00a0was the only rancher to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t mind standing out and standing alone,&#8221; The AP quoted him as saying.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sewell posted a video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/adrian.sewell.73\/videos\/749439198520038\/\" target=\"_blank\">on Facebook<\/a> on Thursday in which he discussed\u00a0what he was about to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There comes a point in time in every person&#8217;s life that they feel the call of duty,&#8221; he said in the video. &#8220;Well, I&#8217;m answering the call, and I&#8217;m on my way into battle, and I need your prayers, because there&#8217;s a lot at stake &#8212; my life, my liberty, and my property.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sewell, who appeared to have\u00a0recorded the video while driving, said he felt the need &#8220;to uphold the United States Constitution to the letter, with no exceptions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ladies and gentlemen, I truly believe that the battle is for your mind, but the war is for your soul,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sewell, who is second vice president for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantcountybeat.com\/news\/news-articles\/25006-grant-county-farm-bureau-holds-annual-meeting-10-23-15\" target=\"_blank\">Grant County Farm Bureau<\/a>,\u00a0asked for prayers.<\/p>\n<p>Ammon Bundy, who has led the armed occupiers\u00a0in Oregon since they took control of the wildlife refuge on Jan. 2, was quoted by the AP as saying he wasn&#8217;t disappointed that only Sewell tore up\u00a0his grazing contract.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very happy he came all the way from New Mexico,&#8221; the AP quoted Bundy saying.<\/p>\n<p>Sewell isn&#8217;t the only New Mexican to head to Oregon during the occupation by Bundy&#8217;s group. On Jan. 11, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/12\/us\/protesters-rip-out-fence-at-refuge-in-oregon.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times<\/a> reported that Garrett VeneKlasen, who works for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, was there to protest the occupation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel threatened, but I\u2019m not going to let a bunch of bullies scare me off of this,&#8221; the newspaper quoted VeneKlasen as saying.<\/p>\n<h3>The occupation<\/h3>\n<p>What&#8217;s the occupation\u00a0about?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/01\/04\/us\/oregon-wildlife-refuge-what-bundy-wants\/\" target=\"_blank\">From CNN<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>First, they want the federal government to relinquish control of the wildlife refuge so &#8220;people can reclaim their resources,&#8221; [Bundy]\u00a0told CNN [earlier this month]. And second, they want an easier sentence for Dwight Hammond and his son Steven, ranchers who were convicted in 2012 of committing arson on federal lands in Oregon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Atlantic has an article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/01\/oregon-mandatory-minimums\/422433\/\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8220;injustice&#8221; of mandatory minimum sentences<\/a>\u00a0and the complex case against the Hammonds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Opponents of mandatory-minimum sentences should oppose them in this case, too, even though there are far more egregious cases to highlight. Opponents of over-incarceration should look askance at sending an elderly man to prison <em>for five years<\/em>\u2013\u2013two years more than Mike Tyson served for rape\u2013\u2013even if he did set a fire to hide an illegal deer hunt. And opponents of overly broad domestic-terrorism laws should object to how the ranchers were prosecuted under them for non-terroristic acts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bundy, Sewell and others say they are\u00a0concerned with what they see as federal overreach in a number of areas related to regulation of federal lands. Bundy asserts that\u00a0the federal government has no authority over lands that it leases for grazing.<\/p>\n<p>Ammon Bundy is the son of Cliven Bundy, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bundy_standoff\" target=\"_blank\">2014 standoff<\/a> with armed law-enforcement officers in Nevada stemmed from his refusal\u00a0to pay federal grazing fees.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon rancher Keith Nantz recently penned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2016\/01\/08\/im-an-oregon-rancher-heres-what-you-dont-understand-about-the-bundy-standoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">an op-ed for the Washington Post<\/a> in which he wrote that he doesn&#8217;t agree with the Oregon occupiers&#8217; tactics but he sympathizes with their position. Grazing on federal land, Nantz\u00a0wrote, &#8220;requires ranchers to follow an unfair, complicated and constantly evolving set of rules.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The siege on our industry has only increased under the Obama administration. Officials are effectively regulating us out of business by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2016\/01\/04\/the-oregon-standoff-is-far-bigger-than-a-group-of-armed-men-in-a-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\">enforcing a string of unprecedented environmental<\/a> restrictions.\u00a0In Malhuer county (next to Harney county, where the current standoff is taking place), the Obama administration is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalpress.com\/Oregon\/20151021\/ranchers-oppose-malheur-county-monument-designation\" target=\"_blank\">considering a measure that will turn 2.5 million<\/a>\u00a0acres of federal land into a \u201cnational monument,\u201d a move that would severely restrict grazing. These restrictions would cause a huge economic downturn for those communities.<\/p>\n<p>These decisions are being made by people who are four to five generations removed from food production. The rule-makers don\u2019t quite understand our industry, and are being spurred on by extreme environmentalist groups asking for unreasonable policy changes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, a Democrat from New Mexico, is among those who have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heinrich.senate.gov\/press-releases\/heinrich-armed-extremists-at-malheur-national-wildlife-refuge-must-be-prosecuted\" target=\"_blank\">called for the prosecution<\/a> of the occupiers in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, the attack on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is only the latest effort in a growing campaign by anti-government interests to seize and sell off the American people&#8217;s public lands,&#8221; Heinrich wrote in a Jan. 14 letter to\u00a0U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am concerned that the absence of federal prosecution after similar events in the past, such as the 2014 standoff near Bunkerville, Nevada, may have emboldened these individuals to seize federal property in the Malheur standoff,&#8221; Heinrich wrote. &#8220;There must be consequences for this sort of dangerous action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being in possession of <a href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/7e0b0a391bd3425ab5ddb65d2ee7b04f\/4000-artifacts-stored-oregon-refuge-held-armed-group\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of archeological artifacts<\/a> stored at the refuge, the occupiers have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/12\/us\/protesters-rip-out-fence-at-refuge-in-oregon.html\" target=\"_blank\">ripped out a fence<\/a> that prevented grazing.<\/p>\n<p>Local residents in Oregon have joined the area&#8217;s sheriff in asking the occupiers to leave. Oregon&#8217;s governor has called on federal authorities to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/oregon-standoff-kate-brown-feds-ammon-bundy-armed-group\/\" target=\"_blank\">put an end to the occupation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sewell, on the other hand, shared a video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/adrian.sewell.73\/posts\/750503185080306\" target=\"_blank\">on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0that showed him renouncing his contract with the U.S. Forest Service. He\u00a0wrote that, on Saturday, &#8220;real Americans stood up against the tyranny of the federal government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>A prior version of this article\u00a0stated that Sewell tore up his contract, quoting The Associated Press\u00a0article incorrectly.\u00a0Sewell renounced his contract with the Forest Service but videos don&#8217;t show him tearing it up.
