{"id":1196,"date":"2007-02-02T11:55:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-02T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/steinborn-tackles-terrorism-border-security\/"},"modified":"2007-02-02T11:55:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-02T17:55:00","slug":"steinborn-tackles-terrorism-border-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/steinborn-tackles-terrorism-border-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Steinborn tackles terrorism, border security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcN7Md4KczI\/AAAAAAAAAt8\/tLuz7qKMt0o\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcN7Md4KczI\/AAAAAAAAAt8\/tLuz7qKMt0o\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026997063184446258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>When he was campaigning last year to become the next representative of District 37 in the state House of Representatives, Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=321&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Steinborn<\/a> promised to help improve security along <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s border with <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and combat terrorism.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As that district\u2019s new representative, Steinborn introduced four bills this week aimed at helping him keep that promise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=++&#038;number=653\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 653<\/a> aims to strengthen <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s antiterrorism act by further defining acts of terrorism that are prohibited and increasing penalties for such acts. Under the proposal, anyone who practices or teaches a broad range of terrorism techniques defined in the bill is guilty of a third-degree felony punishable by up the three years in prison. Anyone who commits an act of terrorism is guilty of a first-degree felony punishable by up to 18 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcN7Td4Kc0I\/AAAAAAAAAuE\/2OjGxlH9KsY\/s1600-h\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcN7Td4Kc0I\/AAAAAAAAAuE\/2OjGxlH9KsY\/s200\/Steinborn,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026997183443530562\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=++&#038;number=633\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 633<\/a> would appropriate $1 million to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety for distribution to police agencies that operate along the border, to be used for border-security projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=JM&#038;number=26\" target=\"_blank\">House Joint Memorial 26<\/a> would create a legislative interim committee focused on border security and issues that would study the situation and make recommendations to the Legislature by Jan. 1, 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/_session.asp?w=com&#038;year=07&#038;chamber=H&#038;type=M&#038;number=15\" target=\"_blank\">House Memorial 15<\/a> would call on the U.S. Congress to create a national immigrant worker program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am joining Governor Richardson and others to help <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> take a big step forward in helping to make our state and country more secure,\u201d Steinborn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said the interim committee proposal is especially important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m calling on my colleagues in the Legislature to join together to establish a border security and border affairs interim committee that will allow us to take a truly comprehensive approach to border affairs, as it affects not just security, but also commerce, health and the environment,\u201d he said. \u201cOur border is a unique region that has complex issues to consider.
