{"id":1187,"date":"2007-02-01T10:34:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-01T16:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/mayor-mattiace-wants-one-more-term-miyagishima-undecided-on-whether-to-challenge-him\/"},"modified":"2007-02-01T10:34:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-01T16:34:00","slug":"mayor-mattiace-wants-one-more-term-miyagishima-undecided-on-whether-to-challenge-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/02\/mayor-mattiace-wants-one-more-term-miyagishima-undecided-on-whether-to-challenge-him\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Mattiace wants one more term; Miyagishima undecided on whether to challenge him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcIXBt4KclI\/AAAAAAAAArM\/8QA5CCq0qvA\/s1600-h\/Mattiace,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcIXBt4KclI\/AAAAAAAAArM\/8QA5CCq0qvA\/s200\/Mattiace,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026605452361364050\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Las Cruces Mayor Bill Mattiace said he wants one more term as the city\u2019s leader, while Councilor Ken Miyagishima, who ran unsuccessfully against Mattiace in 2003, said he hasn\u2019t decided whether to challenge the mayor again this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In addition to mayor, several elected city positions are up for grabs in November:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span>\u2022 The District 1 council seat currently held by Jose Frietze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The District 2 council seat held by Dolores Connor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The District 4 council seat held by Steve Trowbridge, who has announced he won\u2019t seek re-election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 The municipal judgeship held by Melissa Miller-Byrnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcIW3N4KcjI\/AAAAAAAAAq8\/hLIPSOTcc_A\/s1600-h\/Miyagishima,+Ken.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcIW3N4KcjI\/AAAAAAAAAq8\/hLIPSOTcc_A\/s200\/Miyagishima,+Ken.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026605271972737586\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Mattiace was appointed to the position in early 2003 following the resignation of Ruben Smith, who took a job in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Voters opted to keep Mattiace in the job in November of that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Mattiace said one more four-year term will allow him to see many large projects through to completion. The city is currently working on a <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">new city<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> hall, an aquatic recreation center, a civic\/convention center and downtown revitalization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThere are so many projects I want to see fulfilled,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter two full terms and a year, I think it\u2019ll be time to get back to the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miyagishima said he is \u201ccurrently not in a position to give a definite direction\u201d about whether he will run for mayor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI will say that I enjoy the experiences that I receive as city councilor for District 6,\u201d he said. \u201cWorking with our city manager and his professional staff, as well as the fine people of District 6, has been very rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In 2003, Mattiace received just under 40 percent of the vote, while Miyagishima received 25 percent. Three additional challengers split the other 35 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The council incumbents and Miller-Byrnes easily won re-election in 2003, but the District 4 race will be wide open this year.
