{"id":1186,"date":"2007-01-31T18:07:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-01T00:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/ethics-reform-bills-to-be-introduced-thursday\/"},"modified":"2007-01-31T18:07:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-01T00:07:00","slug":"ethics-reform-bills-to-be-introduced-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/01\/ethics-reform-bills-to-be-introduced-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethics reform bills to be introduced Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcEvhrBDpZI\/AAAAAAAAAqw\/5_oFbWBOeyQ\/s1600-h\/Legislature.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RcEvhrBDpZI\/AAAAAAAAAqw\/5_oFbWBOeyQ\/s200\/Legislature.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026350914651530642\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A package of ethics reform bills crafted by House Democrats will be introduced Thursday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Kathleen MacRae, spokeswoman for the House majority leader\u2019s office, confirmed that this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bills come from the recommendations of the governor\u2019s task force, the governor\u2019s own recommendations and negotiations with other legislators, Majority Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=210&#038;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Martinez<\/a> has said. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Martinez<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, who served on the governor\u2019s task force, spent much of today working to finalize the bills before they are introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As I reported Tuesday, Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=191&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Helen Garcia<\/a> will be the House sponsor of the bill that would create a state ethics commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Garcia, a Las Cruces Democrat, had fought for the commission to have disciplinary powers that include the ability to fine, censure and reprimand public officials, state employees, lobbyists and contractors \u2013 the same recommendations made by Gov. Bill Richardson \u2013 but the bill that will be introduced will not give the commission that authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> spokesman Gilbert Gallegos made this comment about that change:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe Governor\u2019s task force developed specific recommendations that have become the basis for long overdue ethics reform, but there is a legislative process that will ultimately determine the details of the reform package,\u201d he said. \u201cThe governor is committed to working with the Legislature to enact a comprehensive package of meaningful reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I\u2019ll have more on the bills once they are introduced. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A package of ethics reform bills crafted by House Democrats will be introduced Thursday.
