The company\u2019s commitment is only verbal at this point, but state officials hope to have something on paper in a couple of months. The state and company have been working for months with an architect on preliminary plans for the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Virgin Galactic\u2019s commitment to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is what makes the state\u2019s spaceport dream possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As state lawmakers are asked for additional money and taxpayers in Do\u00f1a Ana, Otero and Sierra counties are asked to approve a tax increase to help fund Spaceport <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region>, New Mexico Economic Development Department Secretary Rick Homans said Virgin Galactic\u2019s plans in <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sweden<\/st1:country-region> will help Spaceport <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSpaceport <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Sweden<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> is additional confirmation of the worldwide interest and commitment to commercial space travel,\u201d Homans said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsdesk.se\/view\/pressrelease\/127186\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> from the Swedish Space Corporation. \u201cWhile Spaceport America in New Mexico will be Virgin\u2019s world headquarters and primary operating base, having a global network of spaceports for showcase launches will allow Virgin to expand its business and, therefore, help to support the commercial operations here in New Mexico. Spaceport <st1:country-region st=\"on\">America<\/st1:country-region> welcomes Spaceport <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sweden<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> and looks forward to a strong partnership in the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Swedish government plans to work with Virgin Galactic to study the regulatory and operational requirements for launching from that spaceport, then plans to create an operational agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Just like <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> aims to build a spaceport that is the hub of commercial space flight from North America, <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sweden<\/st1:country-region> hopes to do the same in <st1:place st=\"on\">Europe<\/st1:place>. One benefit paying customers might have in taking off from <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Sweden<\/st1:country-region> instead of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is that they can fly into the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aurora_borealis\" target=\"_blank\">Aurora Borealis<\/a> \u2013 the northern lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first flight from Spaceport Sweden \u201cwill take place after Virgin Galactic has established regular commercial operations in the United States and agreed to the necessary procedures to both export the technology and approvals to operate in Swedish airspace,\u201d the news release states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Virgin Galactic plans to begin launching from a temporary facility in Mojave, <st1:state st=\"on\">Calif.<\/st1:state>, in 2008 or 2009, and will move operations to Spaceport <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> once construction is complete in 2009 or 2010. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spaceport Sweden was officially inaugurated on Friday, thanks, in large part, to a partnership with Virgin Galactic that would make it the first spaceport outside the United States used by the company.
